Winter/Spring Film Series Sweet Smell of Sucess Friday, March 18 | 8 pm Museum Auditorium
Tony Curtis, one of the last of the classic Hollywood stars, died last year, and we wanted to celebrate his rakish charm. Although Curtis's teenage fans did not care for his portrayal of the morally flexible Sidney Falco in Sweet Smell of Success, this superb film has not dated—quite the opposite. In the era of 24-hour news, Success seems more prophetic than ever and was praised recently by Entertainment Weekly as “Quite simply one of the greatest New York movies—and movies, period—ever made.”
Sweet Smell of Success (1957) Directed by Alexander Mackendrick. Burt Lancaster, Tony Curtis, Susan Harrison, Martin Milner. (96 min.)
“I love this dirty town.” Icy-hearted gossip columnist J. J. Hunsecker (Lancaster) dispatches fawning press agent Sidney Falco (Curtis) to do his dirty work. Arguably Curtis’s greatest dramatic performance, Success boasts dialogue by Clifford Odets and jazz by Chico Hamilton. “The film is a masterpiece, intelligent Hollywood cinema at its best” (The Guardian). Upcoming Friday, March 25: The Creative Life series begins with the UCLA restoration print of The Red Shoes.
