The Marriage of Figaro

Sung in Italian with English supertitles

Don't miss Mozart's unstoppable masterpiece. Set in the late 18th century, this new production brings to life a lively, stylish world where position is everything and the upstairs/downstairs divide is absolute. Blending breathtaking arias and ensembles with irrepressible characters and chaotic humour, this is Mozart at his theatrical best. Internationally renowned baritone Sir Thomas Allen directs, and Thomas Oliemans, Figaro in 2007's The Barber of Seville, returns to the title role. Acclaimed Mozartian baritone Roderick Williams sings Almaviva and Scottish soprano Kate Valentine sings the role of the Countess.

Cinderella

Cinderella
Wednesday 12 - Saturday 15 January 2011

Artistic Director Ashley Page's spectacular version of Cinderella, one of Scottish Ballet's most popular productions, returns to the stage this winter.

Tormented by her stepmother and stepsisters, Cinderella is lost and lonely, until a simple act of kindness summons her Fairy Godmother who sends her on a magical journey to find happiness.

Showcasing sumptuous designs from award-winning designer Antony McDonald, this vivid reworking of the much-love fairytale is transported to a decadent Vivienne Westwood-meets-Andy Warhol 18th Century France, swept up in Prokofiev's romantic score, performed live by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra. Scottish Ballet's exceptional dancers bring these unforgettable characters to life with genuine emotion and plenty of wit, making Cinderella a fantastic feast of classical and modern dance. Cinderella is touring to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Inverness and Belfast and will be at Edinburgh's Festival Theatre from Wednesday 12 - Saturday 15 January.

Hungary to Sell Communist Relics to Benefit the Victims of Last Month's Red Sludge Flood

A man walks across the basement of the Pinter Gallery storing portraits of Soviet revolutionary Vladimir Lenin before their auction in Budapest, Hungary, Monday, Nov. 22, 2010. More than 200 pieces of communist era relics were found by the Hungarian government in various ministries and state warehouses and will be sold in early December to benefit the victims of last month's red sludge disaster. BUDAPEST (AP).- Hungary will auction off 230 communist-era relics, including a life-size bust of former Soviet dictator Vladimir Lenin, to benefit the victims of last month's red sludge flood. The objects, which also include paintings in the Socialist realism style and photographs of Hungary's communist-era leaders, were found in state warehouses and ministries "where they have been gathering dust for the past 20 years," Bence Retvari, Hungary's state secretary, said Monday. "The state does not want to look after these communist relics anymore," he added. The auction will be held Dec. 6 at the Pinter Gallery in the capital, Budapest. The revenue will go to Caritas, a Catholic charity, to help residents in several western towns left devastated by an Oct. 4 flood of toxic red sludge from a plant reservoir. Ten people died in the deluge and dozens were injured. Gallery owner Peter Pinter said he hoped the most valuable objects would go to a single bidder so "they could then be dona ... More

Lisson Gallery Presents an Exhibition of New Works by Berlin-Based Artist Ceal Floyer

Ceal Floyer, Ladder, 2010. Aluminium ladder. Courtesy the artist and Lisson Gallery.

LONDON.- Lisson Gallery presents an exhibition of new works by Ceal Floyer. Floyer's clarity of thought and the elegantly concise presentation of her ideas resonate through all areas of her practice. The deceptive simplicity of the work is informed by Floyer's particular sense of humour and an awareness of the absurd. Through subtle interventions with everyday objects such as rubbish bags filled with air, cash register receipts or a Tammy Wynette song, Floyer uses double-takes and shifting points of view to force the viewer to renegotiate their perception of the world. Alongside new works the show at Lisson provides a chance to see a reconfiguration of ‘Things’, first shown at KW Institute for Contemporary Arts, Berlin, in 2009. A cluster of plinths stand in an empty room each emitting at different intervals in real time the word "things”, the only audible section from otherwise silenced pop songs. Howeve ... More

R. Crumb, Daughter Look at Life in "Crazy Artist"
By: Christine Kearney
NEW YORK (REUTERS).- Robert Crumb and his daughter Sophie may lovingly squabble about the life they have shared, but they can agree on one thing: the underground scene that allowed the elder Crumb to become a comic book cult hero hardly exists anymore. Crumb, better known as R. Crumb, emerged in the late 1960s as founder of the alternative movement known as comix -- self-published comic books with explicit adult content -- and his 29-year-old daughter is now entering the market with her first title, "Sophie Crumb: Evolution of a Crazy Artist." "Now there is a spectrum, from the most weird, crazy, psycho pornographic stuff to pop mainstream superheroes and all that crap," R. Crumb told Reuters in a rare interview with Sophie. "There isn't really an underground in the old sense." His daughter, sitting opposite him in a small New York art gallery where some of her drawings are being shown, was more emphatic: "I don't think the underground exists any more. It' ... More

Federico Luger Presents Franklin Evans' Second Solo Exhibition at the Gallery
MILAN.- Federico Luger presents "times2," Franklin Evans' second solo exhibition at the Gallery. In this project, Evans moves forward with his research on time and repetition with an installation that, as in previous shows, will include painting, installation and drawing, and a diversity of materials. The show features pairs of works in which each part of the pair will force a consideration about the other. An example of this is the installation on the floor with press releases in the same fashion of the one included in "Greater New York" at MoMA P.S.1, (originofmcurrentmind). In "Times 2", Evans plans to install a photographed version of originofmcurrentmind that will be divided in two. The first path will be the tattered press releases in their suspended state of decay, the second path will be the images from each press release isolated and increased in scale to match the size of the original press release. Both paths ... More

The exhibition is in two parts: 'Lamentations 2010' in the ground floor gallery and in the first floor gallery, 'Shields' (2010). 'Lamentations 2010' is the title for two sets of three sculptures that were created in the pursuit of forms that could express the trauma of death, loss and grief. Kneebone started with the theme of death in the work, 'As grave as the imagined as frivolous as the eternal', addressing each of these universal experiences sequentially, in three separate works. The more recent donation Aisling, Scariff, 1964, is one of McKenna’s early works, showing his focus on the human body expressed using classical means. It is currently on show as part of the Museum’s hugely popular exhibition, The Moderns: the Arts in Ireland from the 1900s to the 1970s. This generous gift follows a donation by the Egan family in 2007 of McKenna’s granite sculpture Ferdia for nÁth/Ferdia at the Ford, 1989, which is on permanent display beside the west avenue at IMMA.
