In Beat Memories, the photographs of American poet Allen Ginsberg form a vivid portrait of the Beat Generation. Through The Robert and Jane Meyerhoff Collection, we come to know one of the most outstanding collections of modern American art. And in Renaissance to Revolution, the National Gallery's collection of old master drawings illustrates the richness and breadth of French draftsmanship before 1800. Relive these landmarks exhibitions by purchasing the catalogues, which capture such remarkable works of art with stunning, color imagery and insightful essays.

Theoretical physicist and expert on the fundamental laws of cities, Dr. Geoffrey West, will present his lecture The Science of Cities and Their Critical Role in Global Sustainability: Growth, Mortality, Innovation, and the Accelerating Pace of Life this Thursday evening. West says he has found the simple equations that define the variables of municipalities and posits that, as our vibrant centers of innovation, cities are our best hope for solving current and future problems. Fresh off of his presentation at the 2011 TED Global Conference, West will join our continuing conversation about building better cities as part of Summer Salon Series.

Read his bio from the Santa Fe Institute, and the New York Times article A Physicist Solves the City.

Backlog in Baghdad

BAGHDAD. The staff of Iraq’s National Museum are struggling to create an inventory of its war-torn collection, so far documenting 20,000 antiquities, less than 10% of its approximately 240,000-strong holdings. These figures have been revealed by Lamia al-Gailani Werr, a London-based scholar who used to work at the museum and recently returned from a visit to Baghdad. At this rate it will take the museum nearly a century to catch up on the backlog...READ MORE

Renaissance Faces: Masterpieces of Italian Portraiture

video pictureBERLIN. The cliché has it that the Renaissance was the period in which the “individual” came into being. Like all clichés, this is both true and overly simple. Nevertheless, the emergence in 15th-century Italy of the personal portrait as a distinct and polyvalent art form is indisputable. This show of about 160 works, in media such as manuscript illumination, marble sculpture and bronze medals, in addition to the lion’s share of paintings, is a collaboration between Stefan Weppelmann, the curator of early Italian and Spanish paintings in the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin, and Keith Christiansen, the John Pope-Hennessy chairman of European paintings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and between their two institutions...
