New Objectivity: Realism in Weimar Cinema Wednesday 13 April - Wednesday 13 JulyAlongside the National Galleries of Scotland's exhibition of August Sander's photography, Filmhouse presents an overview of verité cinema from Weimar Germany. GW Pabst was the foremost proponent of this central strand. We will screen several of his key works, including Joyless Street (1925), Threepenny Opera (1931), and his pacifist masterpiece Westfront 1918 (1930), as well as films by other leading realist filmmakers of the period. This vibrant chapter in German cinema came to an abrupt end with the rise of Nazism in the early thirties, but the films remain gripping today - a testament to the curiosity and innovation of these groundbreaking filmmakers. Find out more and book online here. Pina (2D) Friday 22 Apr to Thursday 5 MayShot with the ensemble of the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, this feature-length dance film portrays the exhilarating and inimitable art of this great German choreographer who died in the summer of 2009. Inviting the viewer on a sensual, visually stunning journey of discovery right onto the stage of the legendary ensemble, the film also accompanies the dancers beyond the theatre, into the city and the surrounding industrial landscape of Wuppertal - the place that was the home and centre of Pina Bausch's creative life for more than 35 years. Find out more and book online here. Muppets™, Music & Magic: Jim Henson's Legacy Monday 18 - Thursday 28 AprilIn association with the Jim Henson Legacy Foundation and Brooklyn Academy of Music, Filmhouse is delighted to present an in-depth retrospective of work by Jim Henson, creator of the Muppets, during the Easter holidays. Around the World in 80 Days By Bengt Ahlfors, based on the novel by Jules Verne Traverse Theatre Wednesday 6 April, 7.30pm, Thursday 7 April, 2.00pm & 7.30pm
"... A gentleman never jokes about wagers. I'll bet you twenty thousand pounds that I can travel around the world in 80 days, with my passport stamped as proof".
When Phileas Fogg, and his faithful servant Passepartout, board the train in London in 1875 he has only 80 days to travel round the world to win the wager between him and his friends at the great Reform Club. A grand adventure lies ahead, using conventional and, more often, unconventional travel arrangements; his journey will include romance, danger and surprises with the redoubtable Scotland Yard pursuing him at every turn.

2 for 1 Tickets for Intermezzo Scottish Opera |
Scottish Opera's Intermezzo Festival Theatre Edinburgh Thursday 7 & Saturday 9 April, 7.15pm
Set in the 1920s, this comedy of manners captures the flaws and foibles of high society with Oscar Wilde-like wit, and no small hint of irony. The conductor Robert Storch and his wife Christine are not getting on. When Christine intercepts a love letter apparently addressed to her husband, she leaps to the obvious conclusion - but has she jumped the gun? Flirtations with penniless barons, confusingly similar names, the mysterious Mitzi Meyer... it all adds up to some stormy misunderstandings and more than a few mix ups. Intermezzo has the full, rich sounds of Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier and Salome but captures an intimacy that is impossible in such larger works. This new production has been created by a team hand-picked by Scottish Opera's Music Director Francesco Corti, with leading German soprano Anita Bader, company favourite Roland Wood, and Scottish tenor Nicky Spence. Sung in German with English supertitles.
'A breathless night, and a colourful one' (****The Scotsman)
