A Master of Pastel
[description]

In the April issue, we profile masters of four different media—sculpture, pastel, oil, and watercolor. Featured artist Lorenzo Chavez, who lives in Colorado, is known for his pastel paintings. He has painted still lifes, portraits, and cityscapes but is enamored with the landscape. "I just get more satisfaction from being in the landscape and painting in it than anything else," he says. "I think it is the meditative quality—to stand out in nature and really look, to just connect with the landscape."

Cine-concert: Art in Motion! with Sharon Louden

ART IN MOTION!

Cine-Concert: Art in Motion!
Sunday, March 27 at 5:00 p.m.

Andrew Simpson, piano; Barry Dove, percussion
Artist Sharon Louden in person

Music and animation synchronize and harmonize in 15 playful abstract shorts by classic and contemporary animators. From Viking Eggeling's 1924 Symphonie diagonale, to Jules Engel's 1968 Silence, to New York artist Sharon Louden's 2011 digital creations—all the works presented are "whimsical, drawn-in-space creations that come alive and create their own narratives," as artist Louden describes her own work. Her new pieces are accompanied by live piano and percussion compositions. The older classic works feature their own original scores, intersections of visual and musical forms. (Approximately 100 minutes)

Winter/Spring Film Series

The Red Shoes
Friday, March 25 | 8 pm
East Building, Museum Auditorium

The Red Shoes

There probably aren't a lot of little girls who will dream of being a ballerina after watching Black Swan. But The Red Shoes is a different story, danced by a young star of the Sadler's Wells Ballet, with authenticity provided by Leonide Massine, formerly of Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. The film's fantastical atmosphere is unforgettable.

The Red Shoes
(1948) Directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. Moira Shearer, Anton Walbrook, Marius Goring, Leonide Massine. (133 min.)

Generations of nascent ballerinas have been inspired by this ravishing adaptation of a Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale into the story of an obsessed ballerina caught between a devilish impresario and a dashing composer. Film critic Michael Sragow calls it “ecstatic entertainment.” Technicolor restoration print from the UCLA Film Archive.

This film will be introduced by NCSU Film Studies Professor Marsha Orgeron.

The Wall Drawings of Sol LeWitt

Ash, of the Green Eyed Monster sister-duo, recently received her Masters degree in Art/Curatorial Practices in the Public Sphere... As part of her program, she interned with the curatorial department at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art. Here she spent many a lunch break wandering the halls of the museum?s three-story retrospective of Sol LeWitt?s wall drawings, and found herself continually inspired by the ?father of conceptual art.?
