Hard ManThe Hard Man

Thursday 31 March- Saturday 9 April

Byrne is a hard man. A fixer. His journey through the ganglands of Glasgow's East End has taken him from teenage truant and petty criminal to gangster and to prison.
'Ma roads mapped oot fur me. Ah keep a chib over the door an a blade in ma bedroom'
The Hard Man is an intense and stylised exploration of notorious gangster turned artist Jimmy Boyle's early life and of the cult of male violence on the streets of Glasgow- a world dominated by struggle and brutality, success and failure, victims and perpetrators.

WeimarThe New Objectivity: Realism in Weimar Cinema

Wednesday 13 April - Wednesday 13 July
Alongside the National Galleries of Scotland's exhibition of August Sander's photography, Filmhouse presents an overview of cinema verité from Weimar Germany. GW Pabst was the foremost proponent of this central strand. We will screen several of his key works, including Joyless Street (1925), Threepenny Opera (1931), and his pacifist masterpiece Westfront 1918 (1930), as well as films by other leading realist filmmakers of the period. This vibrant chapter in German cinema came to an abrupt end with the rise of Nazism in the early thirties, but the films remain gripping today - a testament to the curiosity and innovation of these groundbreaking filmmakers.

JCJohn Cleese's Alimony Tour

Thursday 9- Saturday 11 June
For the first time ever, comedy legend and the most senile member of Monty Python will be bringing his Alimony Tour to the UK. Best known for his idiosyncratic turns in Monty Python's Flying Circus and Fawlty Towers, John Cleese brings his unique comedic perspective to audiences across the UK. From writing to starring in plays, musicals, theatrical and comedy productions, to films and sitcoms, Cleese has done it all, and now it's time for him to tell you about his jam-packed life. Cleese says "it is an evening of well honed anecdotes, psychoanalytical tit-bits, details of recent surgical procedures, and unprovoked attacks on former colleagues, especially Michael Palin".

Snow ShowSlava's Snowshow

Tuesday 18- Saturday 22 October
Slava's Snowshow has taken the world by storm, delighting and touching theatregoers in over 90 cities across the globe and transforming sensible adults into awe-struck children. It has been lavished with critical praise and awards including Olivier, Time Out and Drama Desk awards.  A global phenomenon Slava's Snowshow is unlike anything you have seen before - a show combining hilarity and poignancy with stunning spectacle and breathtaking images. This unmistakably unique comedy masterpiece now comes to Edinburgh for the first time. The ensemble cast of clowns use water, cobwebs, bubbles and dry ice to dazzling effect; a world of wonder in which a bed becomes a boat, a web of cotton envelops the audience and one tiny piece of paper begins a blinding, heart-stopping snowstorm that engulfs an awestruck audience in a blizzard of sparkling snowflakes.
