NEW YORK, N.Y. (REUTERS).- A landscape painting by Austrian artist Gustav Klimt that had been stolen by the Nazis is expected to fetch more than $25 million when it is sold at auction next month, Sotheby's said on Thursday. "Litzlberg on the Attersee," which was returned to the heirs of its Austrian owner, will be the main attraction at the November 2 sale of Impressionist and Modern Art in New York. "Klimt's landscapes are now considered to be one of the great icons of modern art," Simon Shaw, Sotheby's New York head of Impressionist and Modern Art, said in an interview. "They are one of the most recognizable images and their appeal is truly a global one." The work gained international attention earlier this year when Austria's Museum der Moderne Salzburg agreed to return the work to George Jorisch, the grandson of its owner. The decision followed a 2002 accord struck with Jewish organizations and ... More

PHILADELPHIA, PA.- The Philadelphia Museum of Art has acquired the painting Yarrow Mamout, 1819, an exceptionally rare portrait of an African-American by Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827), one of the most renowned American artists of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Depicting an aged man who had been born in Guinea in western Africa, taken into slavery in the American colonies and later manumitted, or freed by his owner, it is one of the very earliest known works to depict a freed slave in the United States and the earliest known painting of a Muslim in America. Upon its completion, Yarrow Mamout was exhibited at Peale’s Museum, in Independence Hall in Philadelphia, where it could be seen alongside other works by the artist and his son Rembrandt that represented George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, Lewis and Clark, David Rittenhouse, and many other accomplished individuals. LOS ANGELES (AP).- Famed New York painter Chuck Close and other artists are suing Sotheby's, Christie's and eBay, contending the auctioneers willfully violated a California law requiring royalty payments on sales of their works. The three federal suits filed Tuesday seek class-action status to represent many other artists and demand unspecified royalties and damages — which could total hundreds of thousands of dollars given current art prices. The suits were filed on behalf of Close — best known for his enormous photorealistic paintings — along with Los Angeles artist Laddie John Dill, and the estate of late sculptor Robert Graham. Graham's works include the ceremonial gate for the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum that was commissioned for the 1984 Olympics and features nude statues modeled on some of the athletes. COLUMBUS, OH.- Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio is remembered as much for his unconventional lifestyle as his immeasurable talent. His revolutionary art along with a life of personal excess, punctuated by late night brawls, attempts on his life, and multiple arrests, culminated with a Papal death warrant that forced him to live as an exile. Tragically, he died while making his way to Rome after receiving news of having been granted a pardon. Although his life ended abruptly at the age of 38, his powerful realism impacted a generation or more of European artists. This October, CMA offers the rare opportunity to view the work of this Italian Baroque master. Ecce Homo (Behold the Man), painted by Caravaggio around ... More

National Museum Cardiff focuses on German artist Joseph Beuys
CARDIFF.- Joseph Beuys, one of the most influential figures in twentieth century art - is well known for the three days he spent in New York, sharing a room with a wild coyote in his ‘action’ I like America and America Likes Me 1974. Photographs of this event were even exhibited at the Wrexham Eisteddfod in 1977. This surprising connection between Beuys and Wales may well be linked to the artist’s longstanding interest in the survival of the Celtic spirit in Europe. This, together with Beuys’ central contribution to the development of postwar European art will be the focus of a new exhibition on display at National Museum Cardiff from 22 October. Beuys’ interest in the Celtic, and its particular relevance to audiences in Wales, is also explored in accompanying events and schools programme. The works on display are taken from ARTIST ROOMS, a new collection of modern and contemporary a ... More

A new series of paintings, drawings and sound-sculptures continues Feige’s study of the American landscape, going beyond his fundamental fascination with land that has been abstracted through human development. The specific geographical depictions that inspire Feige’s geometric interruptions of thought, movement and light are brought to a new place within the artist’s creativity where time and space have lost continuity. Feige cites two central sources for inspiration; the 1974 best seller Dhalgren by science fiction author Samuel Delany and the iconic murals by paleontological reconstruction artist Charles R.
