Goddesses of Americana Music Grace the Park Theater Stage

Lucinda WilliamsLucinda Williams
Wednesday,
July 27 | 8 pm

The woman Time magazine named “America’s greatest songwriter” in 2002 makes her second NCMA appearance in support of Blessed, her strongest album since the Grammy-winning Car Wheels on a Gravel Road. Rave reviews have accompanied Williams’s live performances. Reporting for the Washington Post this spring, Dave McKenna said her “just-plain-astonishing show at the 9:30 Club” featured “great tunes—old and new, rocking and bluesy, sad and sadder—[that] came like waves hitting the beach, one after another after another.”

Gillian WelchGillian Welch
Wednesday,
August 3 | 8 pm

It’s a special pleasure to welcome singer-songwriter Gillian Welch and her longtime accompanist and collaborator David Rawlings to the NCMA for the first time. Welch writes and sings in a style that conjures the stark beauty and directness of American folk balladry, but with a sensibility that is fully modern. Her new album The Harrow and the Harvest—her first in eight years—has drawn high praise from critics and fans. Paste music magazine says, “It’s simply one of the richest, most expansive roots albums to be released in some time.”

Upcoming

Grand master of the six- and 12-string guitar, Leo Kottke, shares his gifts August 6 at 8 pm.

Outdoor Cinema

The Ghost Writer

Friday, July 22 | 9 pm

(2010) Directed by Roman Polanski.

“Master of menace” Roman Polanski crafts a superb, atmospheric political thriller. Pierce Brosnan shines as a British ex-PM in the mold of Tony Blair.

Family Fun in the Setting Sun: How to Train Your Dragon
Saturday, July 23 | 9 pm

(2010) Directed by Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders.

A soaring tale of Vikings and dragons rendered with “tenderness, beauty and exhilaration” (New York Times). One of the year’s best animated features. Join us before the movie at 7:30 pm for special activities and giveaways for kids.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
Friday, July 29 | 9 pm

(2010) Written and directed by Edgar Wright.

A movie for the X-Box generation! “A psychedelic montage of hyper-pop culture, fusing together romance, three decades of video games, fantasy, and alternative rock” (IMDB) by the director of the wildly funny Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.

The King’s Speech
Saturday, July 30 | 9 pm

(2010) Directed by Tom Hooper.

This year’s Best Picture (Academy Awards) recounts the enthralling story of Britain’s King George VI working to overcome a crippling stutter with the help of brilliant speech therapist (and master psychologist) Lionel Logue. Colin Firth won the Oscar for his portrayal of the king; Geoffrey Rush nearly did the same for his supporting performance as the Aussie speech therapist.
