Winter/Spring Film Series

The Red Shoes
Friday, March 25 | 8 pm
East Building, Museum Auditorium

The Red Shoes

There probably aren't a lot of little girls who will dream of being a ballerina after watching Black Swan. But The Red Shoes is a different story, danced by a young star of the Sadler's Wells Ballet, with authenticity provided by Leonide Massine, formerly of Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. The film's fantastical atmosphere is unforgettable.

The Red Shoes
(1948) Directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. Moira Shearer, Anton Walbrook, Marius Goring, Leonide Massine. (133 min.)

Generations of nascent ballerinas have been inspired by this ravishing adaptation of a Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale into the story of an obsessed ballerina caught between a devilish impresario and a dashing composer. Film critic Michael Sragow calls it “ecstatic entertainment.” Technicolor restoration print from the UCLA Film Archive.

This film will be introduced by NCSU Film Studies Professor Marsha Orgeron.
