Fall Film Series

Ikiru (To Live)
Friday, October 1 | 8 p.m.
Museum Auditorium

Ikiru

Sometimes there are classic films you feel you "ought" to see because of their reputation in world cinema. If the moment has never before been right for Ikiru, the moment has now arrived. You will not regret seeing this deeply emotional and uplifting masterpiece, a personal favorite of one of the great filmmaking masters, Akira Kurosawa, as we continue to celebrate the 100th anniversary of his birth. You've seen Takashi Shimura as the leader of the Seven Samurai and as the alcoholic doctor in Drunken Angel, but don't miss him in his greatest role.

Ikiru (To Live)
(1952) Directed by Akira Kurosawa. Takashi Shimura, Nobuo Kaneko, Miki Odagiri. (143 min.)

A meek bureaucrat smothered by numbing routine, using his rubber stamp to cancel out hope, learns he has only a short time to live. He decides to make one small difference in the world. A brilliant performance by Kurosawa’s other muse, Takashi Shimura. “One of cinema’s noblest, most humane pinnacles.”—Elliot Wilhelm, film curator
