HAMBURG.- Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938), founding member of the Die Brücke (The Bridge) artists group in Dresden, Germany 1905, is among the most influential artist personalities in German classical Modernism. A trailblazer for Expressionist art, he succeeded in creating some of the most innovative formal solutions of his day - particularly as a printmaker. The exhibition at the Hamburger Kunsthalle features a representative overview of the most significant phases in Kirchners creative development: the early work showing studio and street scenes of Dresden and Berlin, work created during summer stays on the Baltic Sea island Fehrmarn and the later work in Davos. The exhibition itself centers primarily on paintings from the Kunsthalles own collection along with selected loans, all works indisputably regarded as the high point of Kirchners oeuvre as a painter. For the first time, these paintings ... More | | Solo Show of Paintings by the American Artist Pat Steir at Galerie Jaeger Bucher

PARIS.- Galerie Jaeger Bucher presents a solo show by the American artist Pat Steir, born in Newark, New Jersey. Since her first exposition in New York in 1964 at the gallery Terri Dintenfass, Pat Steir has created a broad spectrum of paintings all born from her pouring technique which has been refined to the point of virtuosity : layers of paintings placed as successive veils whose meditative silence is reminiscent of Agnes Martin pictorial space. The art of Pat Steir resides in the delicately equilibrated interplay between the force of gravity and the properties of the paint, for its quantity, consistency and substance determine the fragile oscillation between deliberate control and chance occurrence. With this technique, Pat Steir works with what she calls herself the nature of painting and uses her body as a Kyudo arch or as a compass in order to better express the work from a ... HAMBURG.- Deichtorhallen Hamburg is staging a retrospective showcasing over 400 exhibits that provide a comprehensive insight into the art of the Danish painter, sculptor, filmmaker and performing artist Poul Gernes (*1925, 1996), who numbers among the most influential of Scandinavian artists. In the 50 years that he was active he had numerous exhibitions; in 1988, his work featured in the Danish pavilion at the Venice Biennial, and he shaped the face of more than 150 buildings in Denmark. He left behind an impressive oeuvre, which is fascinating on account of its extraordinary complexity and his aesthetic is as topical today as it as when he developed it in the 1960s and 1970s. Curator of the exhibition Dirk Luckow (General Director of Deichtorhallen Hamburg) describes Poul Gernes oeuvre as hilarious, anarchic, opulent, joyful, folkloristic, funky, psychedelic while at the same time also emphasizing ... JERICHO (AP).- Visitors to ancient Jericho got a rare glimpse Sunday of a massive 1,200-year-old carpet mosaic measuring nearly 900 square meters (9,700 square feet), making it one of the largest in the Middle East. The small red, blue and ochre square stones laid out in sweeping geometric and floral patterns cover the floor of the main bath house of an Islamic palace that was destroyed by an earthquake in the eighth century. Since being excavated in the 1930s and 1940s, the mosaic has largely remained hidden under layers of canvas and soil to protect it against sun and rain. Starting Sunday, a small section will be laid bare for a week, as part of Jericho's 10,000th birthday celebrations. The mosaic then will be covered up again until the money is found to build a roof that would serve as a permanent weather shield, said Palestinian archaeologist ... LONDON.- 'Transmission' brings together three emerging London-based artists a painter, a sculptor and a multimedia artist and explores the affinities they share with regards to notions of transference and abstraction. While the work of Adam Dix, Alex Hoda and Katie Paterson is shaped by very different thematic and formal concerns, there are underlying correspondences in their approach to considerations such as the transmission of meaning, the dislocation of context and the mutation of form. Objects and forms are often manipulated or abstracted in their works, their original function obscured. This exhibition seeks to reveal the points of intersection in Dix, Hoda and Paterson's practices, showcasing the work of three exciting young artists at the start of promising careers. Adam Dix mines the graphic culture and sociology of the 1950s in his ... More | | Largest-Ever Exhibition in Scandinavia of the Work of Alice Neel at Moderna Museet Malmö

MALMO.- This autumn, Moderna Museet Malmö presents Alice Neel: Painted Truths the largest exhibition of this American artist ever to be shown in Scandinavia. With 59 works spanning more than 70 years, the exhibition fills the entire Turbine Hall and the new gallery at Moderna Museet Malmö. Today, Alice Neel (1900-1984) is an iconic figure in American painting. For most of her life, however, she worked without recognition from either critics or the public. Persistently and unremittingly, Neel continued to paint portraits or pictures of people, as she preferred to call them in an era that was dominated by abstract expressionism, pop art and the readily available photograph. Alice Neels oeuvre is characterised by a genuine fascination with people and a striving to make sense of the human drama of everyday life. Neighbours, friends, artist colleagues and family ... COLOGNE.- The Museum Ludwig and Suchan Kinoshita (born 1962 in Tokyo, lives in Maastricht and Münster) will receive the Fine Arts Prize of the Board of Trustees of the Plastics Industry (Kunstpreis des Kuratoriums der Kunststoff-Industrie). This prize has enabled the Japanese-German artist to install a solo exhibition in the Museum Ludwigs largest sun-lighted gallery. Contrasts play a central role in Kinoshitas work: sound and silence, distance and nearness, persistence and fleetingness. These themes are not just coincidentally related to theatre and music. For Kinoshita, who came to Cologne in 1981 to study at the music academy, this connection is a matter of course. In her works, she consistently roams the crossroads of theater, music and visual art. In her installations, Kinoshita creates a subtle interplay of objects, sounds and spatial perception. This invites the visitor to move through the installation ... NEW YORK, NY.- Parallel Universes, an exhibition of new paintings by Sandra Lerner that display anew her dramatic use of calligraphic form and subtle color to delve into the eternal mysteries of the universe, opened at the June Kelly Gallery, 166 Mercer Street, on October 7. The works will remain on view through November 9. Her recent paintings, Lerner says, draw upon her long exploration of the similarities between Eastern philosophy and the latesttest theories in physics and cosmology. I try to incorporate calligraphy's expressive force to conjure up references to nature as well the multiple universes that exist. In an essay on Lerners new work, art writer Phyllis Braff says, A very physical, very energetic and very direct interpretation of Japanese calligraphy became a part of Sandra Lerners painting approach at an early point in her career. FORT WORTH, TX.- A detailed scale model of Renzo Pianos design for the Kimbell Art Museums new west building is now on display in the Museums lobby. The model is beautiful, commented Eric M. Lee, the Museums director. It will provide visitors with a clearer understanding of how the new building relates to the Kahn building and how it will be positioned in the landscape. The new Piano-designed building consists of two connected structures: the first, facing and echoing the west front of the Kahn building; the second, running parallel in the rear. More | More News | Local Collector's Estate Realizes Over $900,000 at Auction PHILADELPHIA, PA.- It was one of Joseph Sorger's last wishes to have his estate sold at auction at Freeman's, a venue at which he had procured much of his collection. Tuesday, that wish was realized, and with great success. A full sale room, over 17 busy phone lines, and 294 online bidders indicated the interest of buyers in Sorger and his notable estate. Unpredicted action was seen on a number of pieces at the auction, including many lots of Asian art, and culminating in the pinnacle sale: the second to last item up for auction. The painting was by The French School, circa 1800, of Coriolanus, which fetched $46,600 more than 30 times the estimated value. The sale of Sorger's estate clearly attracted attention due to not only the quality of his collection, but also due to the legacy of his personality. Kate Molets, the Exhibition Manager for the sale, mentioned that "As people came through the exhibition (held at Sorge ... More
Jonas Lipps' "Available Material of the Necessary Time" at Klosterfelde BERLIN.- It was my first time in the studio/home (or home/studio) of Jonas Lipps. I was certain of entering a living condition in which the artist proceeds in total harmony with the work. I imagined as much not only because Jonas Lipps lives in the spaces where he produces his works, but also because it could not be otherwise, given the psychological component that goes into his operation, along with the element of time, his time, as the condition in which sketches, projects, images and definitive works take form. The factors with which to organize an interpretation of Lippss work are found at multiple starting points. Certainly the process of recognition of the final moment proceeds through a long, precise effort of accumulation of material, which is the intermediate space between the various phases of growth of the idea. Dozens and dozens of elements move in this space, different forms make up the material on which Lipps acts, through drawing or other methods. The waterc ... More

Galerie Michael Janssen Opens First Exhibition with Belgian Artist Joris Van de Moortel BERLIN.- Galerie Michael Janssen presents for the first time Belgian artist Joris Van de Moortel with the exhibition Like a hurricane (you are like). Van de Moortels practice and work consist of a complex web of ideas and references with a processual and performative approach. It combines different disciplines and is characterized by a radical deployment of material in which predicted chance or planned accidents play a central role. His practice disrupts all expectations of what sculpture can be and plays with notions of referentiality. Similar to Marcel Broodthaers, Van de Moortel uses found or discarded material in order to create new objects and meaning from existing things. In his raw sculptures and installations Van de Moortel arranges objects in extreme situations stripping them of their original function. They seem like attempts to capture and accumulate energy and often feel like time bom ... More
