PARIS (AP).- At the end of Jean-Michel Basquiat's short life, the explosively talented but troubled New York artist had a dream to stage a major exhibit of his eyepopping, doodle-covered work in Paris. Nearly 50 years after his birth, and 22 years after his death at age 27 of a drug overdose, Basquiat's wish has finally come true. "Basquiat," which opened Friday at the Modern Art Museum of the City of Paris, brings together more than 150 pieces that trace his rise from graffiti artist to star of the New York art scene. The son of a Haitian father and Puerto Rican mother, Basquiat was the first to break the glass ceiling that had kept black artists out of the art elite. Curators said his dazzling rise helped pave the way for other prominent African-Americans, including President Barack Obama, who was born one year after Basquiat. "Jean-Michel Basquiat is a very important link in the chain that led to black Ameri ... More | | Extensive Pablo Picasso Exhibition Opens at the National Gallery of Denmark
Pablo Picasso (1881 - 1973), Man Unveiling a Woman. Holstebro Kunstmuseum, 1931.
COPENHAGEN.- One of the seminal figures from art history receives full treatment at the National Gallery of Denmark with an extensive exhibition about Pablo Picasso held at the Royal Collection of Graphic Art. Featuring about 110 works, the exhibition traces the main lines of development running through Picassos effervescently varied universe by looking at important highlights from his graphic work as well as carefully chosen original drawings. Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) is a true beacon towering up above the occasionally confusing flow of new departures and clean breaks that characterise the art scene of the first half of the 20th century. More than any other artist, Picasso would reinvent his artistic mode of expression over and over again. Experimentation became his lifes work, and his immense, far-ranging body of work testifies to an artist with a rare ability to appropriate new movements while translating them into ... BERLIN (AP).- A rare sheet of 10 stamps depicting Audrey Hepburn fetched euro430,000 ($606,000) at a charity auction in Berlin on Saturday, two-thirds of which will go to help educate children in sub-Saharan Africa. The mint-condition sheet of 10 stamps featuring Hepburn, a coy smile on her face and a long, black cigarette holder dangling from her lips, brought a profitable outcome to a botched stamp series that should have been destroyed years ago and evokes Hepburn's starring role in the 1963 thriller "Charade," in which the characters chase a set of rare stamps. Sean Ferrer, 50, Hepburn's son with actor and director Mel Ferrer, and the chair of the Audrey Hepburn Children's Fund, said he was thrilled that the sale Saturday brought "focus on children in need," but ...
