Fall Film Series Bright Eyes Friday, October 29 | 8 pm Museum Auditorium
When we think about Norman Rockwell-esque movies, Shirley Temple springs to mind. Many of us saw her movies long ago. Recently our film curator watched a couple, then read her autobiography, then watched a few more, then continued reading and watching, becoming mildly obsessed. This dimpled darling was the No. 1 box office star of her day, saving 20th Century Fox Studios from Depression-era bankruptcy. She was serious about her performances even from a young age. She's a genius—really. Let the Shirley Temple revival begin!
Bright Eyes (1934) Directed by David Butler. Shirley Temple, James Dunn, Jane Withers. (85 min.)
Plucky Shirley is the mascot of a ragtag group of pilots, while her mother works as a maid serving a mercenary couple waiting for wealthy Uncle Ned to croak, enriching them and their horrifically bratty daughter. Temple’s first big hit includes her signature song, “The Good Ship Lollipop.”
