Magic

LONDONART.CO.UK

"Magic becomes art when it has nothing to hide." Ben Okri

"Art is magic delivered from the lie of being truth." Theodor Adorno

"A world in which elves exist and magic works offers greater opportunities to digress and explore." Terry Brooks

"Disbelief in magic can force a poor soul into believing in government and business." Tom Robbins

Artists speak the language of magicians. They understand that the difference between 'competant' and 'brilliant' is as fine as a gossamer thread from a fairy coat and as wide as the Mississippi river. What makes the difference? Something that should remain illusive. Magic ceases to be magic when explained.

London Art is host to broad church of 'believers'. Just tap in 'The Magician' to the search engine to see what comes up: Simon Temblett's Oberon style figure on the one hand and Nikki Attree's surreal scene with a seagull in a top hat on the other. And here are some more artefacts from the witches' cave: Halloween by Ivan Mitev, The Big Sheep or Ghost of a Frog by Peter Rudolfo and Vikky Furse's Devil's Fiesta series.

The last thing you can say about any of these paintings is that they're predictable. In fact they leave you with the distinct feeling that things are not what they seem...

The Big Sheep by Peter Rodulfo
