BOSTON (REUTERS).- When redecorating his home some years ago, financier Henry Kravis sold a painting by John Singer Sargent to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. The painting -- "Charles Stewart Sixth Marquess of Londonderry, Carrying the Great Sword of State at the Coronation of King Edward V11 August 1902, and Mr. W.C. Beaumont, his Page on That Occasion" -- is one of thousands of works that will now be displayed at the museum's new Art of the Americas Wing, which opens to the public on Nov 20. "This is the kind of Sargent that is a real opportunity for a museum because it is not the kind of Sargent that is popular in commercial terms," museum director Malcolm Rogers told a news conference on Friday to launch the wing. Hanging close to the "Lord Londonderry" painting is Sargent's immensely popular 1882 painting, "The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit." Sargent is one of hundreds of American artists represented in the Art of the Am ... More

Avner Ben-Gal, Untitled, 2010. Acrylic pencil and paper on paper, 82 x 57.5 inches, 208.3 x 146.1 cm. Photo: Courtesy of the artist and Bortolami, NY.

NEW YORK, NY.- Bortolami presents its second solo exhibition of Avner Ben-Gal. Smackville draws from abstract and visual representations of the effects of opiate drugs: withdrawal, craving and usage. The show seeks to describe the moment of the chemical reaction when the toxic substance intrudes the body and is infused into the bloodstream. The works convey a will for redemption, rather than a need to be rehabilitated. The exhibition is divided into two new groups of works. One group is comprised of large drawings on paper, made mostly with black marker and slight touches of other colors. The drawn scenes depict human figures and animals being caught in an intensive, hysterical state. The lines are sharp, evoking needles, paralleling the conditions of the drawings surface, which is dry, and the state of being "dry" and suffering from withdrawal deliriums. The second group of works, consisting of paintings, addresses ... More

Gratz Family Portraits Reunited at Philadelphia's Rosenbach Museum & Library

Rebecca Gratz.

PHILADELPHIA, PA.- The Rosenbach Museum & Library in Philadelphia announces the acquisition of two artistically and culturally significant portraits originally belonging to the Gratz Family, a prominent early American Jewish family who lived in Philadelphia. The paintings include a visually stunning portrait of philanthropist, social activist, and Jewish leader Rebecca Gratz painted in 1831 by Thomas Sully, and a portrait of her brother, Joseph Gratz by George Peter Alexander Healy (not dated). Both portraits were originally painted in Philadelphia, and documentation suggests the portrait of Rebecca Gratz has not been displayed on public view since 1922 and the portrait of Joseph Gratz has never been exhibited. After two generations apart, the portraits of Rebecca and Joseph will join portraits of other Gratz family members in the Rosenbach’s collection, on display to the public beginning Tuesday, November 9. Exhibition Explores the Conceptual Process of British Installation Artist Andy Goldsworthy

Andy Goldsworthy, Hand hit site dust, Presidio Spire, October 2008. Unique Ilfochrome print, 16 x 16 inches.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA.- Haines Gallery presents Incidental Objects, an exhibition exploring the conceptual process of British installation artist Andy Goldsworthy. Though popularly known for his ephemeral pieces that disappear over time, Goldsworthy has dedicated a large percentage of his focus toward the completion of over 120 commissioned, permanent installations over the past 25 years. For the artist, these permanent and temporary works function symbiotically, with temporary or experimental works often aiding in the development or realization of these commissions. Goldsworthy’s exhibition at Haines Gallery highlights some of these “incidental” works, providing a rare view into the conceptual nature of the artist’s process. Works in the exhibition include proposal drawings for several permanent commissions, including Spire (a recently completed work in the Presidio Park of San Francisco), Wood Line ... More

By: Jill Lawless, Associated Press

LONDON (AP).- It was just an old Chinese vase that had been in the family for 80 years. It turned out to be much more. When the intricately painted 18th-century piece went on the block at Bainbridges, a small suburban London auction house, it sold for a record $83 million Thursday, scooped up by a Chinese buyer. "How do you anticipate the Chinese market?" asked the shocked auctioneer, Peter Bainbridge. "It's totally on fire." The sale price was more than 40 times the pre-sale estimate and a record for a Chinese work of art — an outcome Bainbridge called "a fairy tale" for the family who owned the vase. The sellers, who wished to remain anonymous, are the sister and nephew of a deceased elderly woman in the West London suburb of Pinner. The vase had been in the family at least since ... More

Strong, Colorful Surreal Paintings by Philemona Williamson at June Kelly Gallery
NEW YORK, NY.- Fractured Tales, an exhibition of new paintings by Philemona Williamson — strong, colorful surreal narratives that both unsettle and delight -- opened at the June Kelly Gallery, on November 12. The exhibition will remain on view until December 14. Williamson injects the edginess of imagination, memory and mystery in her examination of life stages between adolescence and adulthood. She brings intrigue into the daily human drama of searching for identity and constancy, and her figures abound with restless energy and uncertainty. Williamson says she thinks of her paintings more as an ongoing rearrangement of dreams. And because of the difficulty of making dreams a reality, her figures must juggle, contort, cajole and always be in competition. Williamson is fascinated with the innocence and wonder of pubescent youth and its inevitable progression toward adulthood. In Fractured Tales, her figures ... More

Neglect Threatens Many of Italy's Cherished Ruins
By: Frances D'Emilio, Associated Press
ROME (AP).- For all of Italy's ancient wonders, the real wonder might be that so many are still standing, given the poor care they get. The collapse in Pompeii last week of a frescoed house where gladiators prepared for combat was the latest loss. The structure had survived the explosion of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. but apparently could not withstand modern neglect. "We're stunned when some walls fall down. But these are ruins not systematically maintained, so the miracle is that so few of them collapse," said Andrea Carandini, a world-renowned archaeologist who leads a panel of professional consultants in the Cultural Ministry. Last spring, a huge segment of Nero's fabled Golden Palace beneath Rome gave way, raining down pieces of vaulted ceiling in one of the galleries under a garden popular with strollers. Three years ago, a 20-foot (6-meter) section of ancient wall crumpled into a pile of bricks after days of heavy rain. The wall had ... More
