Art Believed Destroyed by Nazis Found in Berlin to Go On Display at Neues Museum

Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit (R) and Matthias Wemhoff, the head of the Berlin Museum for Prehistory and Early History, inspect a sculpture that was discovered during archaeological excavations in central Berlin and is now on display in the New Museum in Berlin November 8, 2010. The unidentified sculpture is one of 11 pieces of art that were found during archaeological excavations in Berlin and initially thought to be of ancient origin. Research revealed that the pieces were part of the 1937 travelling exhibition "Entartete Kunst" (Degenerate Art): a collection of art the Nazis deemed un-German or Jewish and which they displayed in a manner that derided the works and their authors. BERLIN (AP).- Nearly a dozen sculptures considered by the Nazis to be "degenerate" artwork and believed to have been lost or destroyed after World War II have been unearthed during construction near Berlin's city hall and were shown to reporters Monday. The terra-cotta and bronze statues were found during a dig to lay down a new subway line. They belonged to a collection of 15,000 works condemned by Hitler's regime for containing "deviant" sexual elements, anti-nationalistic themes or criticizing Nazi ideology. The sculptures mainly depict women — a woman holding grapes, a mother and her child, a full-figured woman stretching — the other three are of males. Ten of the pieces will go on display Tuesday in Berlin's Neues Museum. One, a male terra-cotta head, is too fragile for display. Construction workers found the art on the site of an office building that burned down in the summer of 1944, Museum Director Matthias Wemhoff told reporters Monday. The fire started in th ... More

Renowned Los Angeles Painter Ed Moses Opens a Solo Exhibition at Brian Gross Fine Art

Ed Moses, Anima Kracker, 2009, acrylic on canvas, 60 x 42 inches. Photo: Courtesy Brian Gross Fine Art.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA.- Renowned Los Angeles painter Ed Moses opened a solo exhibition, wic wack, at Brian Gross Fine Art. While Moses is known for his innovative, non-objective abstractions, the works on view explore pattern and figuration through fabric stencils, animal motifs, and face-like forms. The exhibition continues through December 23. These dynamic, textile-like paintings can be a shock to those who identify Moses as a purely abstract painter. Large, vivid compositions feature mysterious offset patterns and silhouettes of paired “talking heads.” In works such as Anima Kracker, exotic fauna such as zebras, tigers, and giraffes overlap and converge, like zoological quilts. Many animals sport their own patterns of stripes and spots, adding another layer of complexity to the designs. In some areas, patches of floral lace seem to cut through the canvas in dissolving—or perhaps solidifying—forms. ... More

Israeli Artists Boycott New Theater in Settlement
By: Karin Laub, Associated Press
ARIEL (AP).- An artists' boycott of a $11 million performing arts center opening Monday in the Jewish settlement of Ariel is giving a new twist to a pressing question — where should Israel's permanent borders run? Leading Israeli playwrights, actors and artists say they will not cross the "Green Line" — Israel's frontier before it captured the West Bank in 1967 — to perform in the new theater in Ariel, an Israeli enclave of 19,000 people. The artists wrote in a letter explaining the boycott that Ariel was built in the heart of a war-won land to prevent creation of a Palestinian state. Ariel's defenders say most Israelis want the settlement to be annexed to Israel in any future peace deal. In an angry backlash led by hawkish Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, they have threatened to strip the protesters of their government subsidies. The argument flared as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrived Sunday in the U.S., wher ... More

Unseen for 100 Years: Georgios Jakobides' Peek-A-Boo Comes to Light at Bonhams
LONDON.- A Munich School masterpiece by the Greek painter, Georgios Jakobides (1852-1932), which has been hidden from the public eye for over a century, and was recently discovered in a private collection in Athens, is to be sold at Bonhams, New Bond Street, as part of The Greek Sale on 23 November 2010. Entitled Peek-a-boo, it has attracted a pre-sale estimate of £150,000 – 200,000. The painting, which was unexpectedly discovered on a normal house valuation, was last seen in public when it was exhibited at the prestigious Glaspalast in Munich in 1896 under the title Versteckspiel and shown at the Zappeion Hall in Athens three years later by the title Kryftoulaki. A review of the latter show in the 3 March 1989 edition of Embros stated: ‘Jakobides incorporates two distinct qualities - that of the realist who faithfully depicts the world of appearances and that of the idealist who glorifies it. This duality is readily ... More

Denver Museum of Nature & Science Excavation Crews Unearth a Spectacular Bison Skull and Horns at the Snowmass Village
SNOWMASS VILLAGE.- On Saturday afternoon, Denver Museum of Nature & Science excavation crews uncovered one of the most spectacular discoveries yet at the Ice Age fossil dig site near Snowmass Village -- the skull and horns of a gigantic Ice Age bison. As a Gould construction bulldozer carefully moved muddy silt near the bottom of the reservoir site, Dr. Ian Miller, the Museum's curator of paleontology and chair of the Earth Science Department, spotted an extremely large bison horn core exposed by the heavy machine operator. The horn was so large Miller initially mistook it for a mammoth or mastodon tusk. The bulldozer made one more careful pass through the area and exposed a second horn core, which led scientists to the spot where a gigantic bison skull was discovered. When both horns were repositioned with the skull, the span of the horns was greater than six feet. "I'm trying to think of a cooler fossil that I've ever seen in m ... More

Colorado Goodwill Auctions Purported Dali Print
GRAND JUNCTION (AP).- A Colorado Goodwill store is auctioning off a purported lithograph of a Salvador Dali work that it received from a mystery donor. But the Grand Junction shop says it doesn't plan to verify the work's authenticity. A customer at the store recently pointed out the signature on the print of "The Discovery of America by Christopher Columbus," which was numbered 168 out of 300. Manager Bill Atwell told Denver's KMGH-TV he doesn't know who donated the piece. Atwell says the store is "here just to raise money for our programs," and it isn't going to pay an expert to determine if the work is authentic. He says the store will instead let people bid for the piece and determine its value on their own. As of Monday afternoon, bidding had climbed to $550. The original painting is in the Salvador Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, Fla. ... More
