"There is one spectacle grander than the sea, that is the sky; there is one spectacle grander than the sky, that is the interior of the soul" Victor Hugo
"Surely there must be some way to find a husband or, for that matter, merely an escort, without sacrificing one's privacy, self-respect, and interior decorating scheme." Barbara Ehrenreich, American writer and feminist.
Considering we spend most of our time indoors (Americans on average spend 90% of their time inside), it's not surprising that interiors are so important to us. Our homes are meant to be a reflection of our inner psyche (tidy room = tidy mind etc.) but what artist would ever boast they had a tidy studio?
Here are some interior spectacles for you feast your eyes on: Christian Furr paints mis-en-scenes ('Room at the Top', 'Reality Show') which crackle with sexual tension, hinting at past or future liaisons or sex as labour exchange. Carol Fulton has created a stunning photographic series which explore the play of natural light on empty rooms, with some mysterious effects (see 'Interior - Light on wall, Greece')
Some artists are drawn to the exoticism of foreign interiors (Venetian Afternoon by Gerdi Jansen, 'Paris Interior in Spring' by Richard Jenkins) whereas others just explore their own studios or flats ( 'Artists Studio' by Wilson Alan, 'Greenroom' by Ben Petzold). For those with an interest in 'interior architecture' take a look at Munir Eisa and John Wragg ('Into The Hypertessa Interior.')
Of course London Art believe that the best way to improve your interior environment is to put some nice paintings in it. | |
