Discover how to translate emotion into paint on canvas with this week's artistsnetwork.tv video, Beyond Realism with Brian Ryder, Part 1. Brian leads you from reference photos and the experience of the landscape, through a series of watercolor, acrylic and oil sketches to establish the values, color, mood and composition of the scene, getting to know the subject and loosening up as you go. He then shows you techniques to move beyond realism to a bolder, more abstract version of a poppy-filled landscape as he paints it from start to finish. Follow along to get an understanding of the design decisions made at various stages of an abstract painting. In this preview, Brian drives home the initial impact of the landscape as he develops the final stages of the painting. Create More Textures in Pen & Ink!
