The Pre-Raphaelite Lens:
British Photography and Painting, 1848–1875

Searching for new ways to represent the natural world and the human form and to communicate stories, Victorian-era British photographers and Pre-Raphaelite painters shattered traditional approaches to picture making. The first exhibition to examine this rich interaction includes some 100 photographs and 20 paintings and watercolors by leading artists such as Julia Margaret Cameron, Lewis Carroll, John Everett Millais, and Dante Gabriel Rossetti.

Picturing the Victorians:
British Photographs and Reproductive Prints from the Department of Image Collections

Developments in printmaking and photography in the 19th century made a wide range of art reproductions available in Victorian England. This exhibition presents 22 rare photographs and reproductive prints documenting the work of Victorian-era artists, such as John Everett Millais, Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones, George Frederic Watts, and Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema.

Modern Lab: There is nothing to see here
Modern Lab: There is nothing to see here

Verging on invisibility or immateriality, works by such artists as John McCracken, Nam June Paik, and Glenn Ligon can provoke, mystify, or even go unnoticed. Challenging the viewer to look closely, the works in this exhibition emphasize the relationship between the medium, subject, and content. Modern Lab is a small gallery dedicated to focused installations of modern and contemporary objects from the Gallery’s collection.

In the 14th annual endowed lecture named after the great specialist of Italian art Sydney J. Michael Fried, J. R. Herbert Boone Professor of Humanities and the History of Art, The Johns Hopkins University, will sign his book The Moment of Caravaggio, after the lecture. (50 mins.)

Edvard Munch: Master Prints

Haunting images of universal human experiences such as love, death, and jealousy are presented in an exhibition of 59 important prints by Norwegian artist Edvard Munch (1865–1944). Selected from the Gallery's holdings and from two exceptional private collections, the exhibition examines Munch’s creative approach. His process involved transforming ideas into an evocative motif and exploring that motif through numerous variations over a lifetime.

Gift of the Avalon Foundation

While autumnal scenes traditionally are associated with the transience of life, Cropsey's painting is more a celebration of American nationalism. As a critic wrote in 1860, the picture represents "not the solemn wasting away of the year, but its joyful crowning festival."
