Diva's and Deities

LONDONART.CO.UK

"Art! Who comprehends her? With whom can one consult concerning this great goddess?" Ludwig van Beethoven

"God may be in the details, but the goddess is in the questions. Once we begin to ask them, there's no turning back." Gloria Steinem

"For me the goddess is the female of God, She is powerful if different." Tina Turner

"You know when I feel inwardly beautiful? When I am with my girlfriends and we are having a 'goddess circle'" Jennifer Aniston

Tina Turner might have thought the goddess is the "female of God" but followers of the increasingly popular goddess cult (like Jennifer Aniston) would disagree. "In Goddess religion death is not feared, but is understood to be a part of life, followed by birth and renewal," writes Carol P. Christ in her bestselling book, 'Why Women Need the Goddess'. "The most basic meaning of the symbol of the Goddess is the acknowledgment of the legitimacy of female power as a beneficent and independent power." The goddess is not hung up about her sexuality - she is sexuality. By becoming a goddess, a woman transcends the role which patriarchal tradition puts upon her - or does she?

London Art is host to a wide variety of goddess exotica but unsurprisingly, many of them are painted by male admirers! Feast your eyes on 'Woman Carrying Vases' by Horacio Cardozo, 'Angelina Jolie' by Ed Chapman, 'Madonna pagana con luna e feticci' by Giuseppe Sebastiano Devoti, 'Venus' by Christian Furr and 'Aphrodite Unchained' by Zachary Walsh. But if you dare treat them as mere sex objects, the wrath of the Goddess will descend - be warned!
