Inspiring - Christmas Wheel
Dear omss,

Edinburgh is a picture this December. It might be freezing, but it's so beautiful outside - the lights are up, there's snow on the ground - and there's plenty on in Edinburgh's galleries to take your mind off the cold.
So whether it's partying with Collective and Stills at their Christmas Party, or making it in for the last few weeks of Childish Things at the Fruitmarket Gallery, don't let the cold stop you from seeing Edinburgh's art this Christmas.

When artists root their work in the social enocunter, the documentary modeplays a central role in mediating events and experiences. Though the resulting material often bears a close resemblance to ethnographic mapping, investigative journalism or evencommunity work, many of today's artists operate in somewhat murkier waters. Working outside - or even deliberately corrupting - accepted conventions and frameworks, the artists participating in this two-part exhibition find alternative means to engage with social realities in situations of war, sex and political urgency.

Curated by David Hopkins

Childish Things is The Fruitmarket Gallery's second collaboration with David Hopkins, Professor of Art History at the University of Glasgow; acknowledged authority on Marcel Duchamp, dada and surrealism; increasingly renowned writer on contemporary art; and curator of the popular 2006 Fruitmarket Gallery exhibition Dada's Boys: Identity and Play in Contemporary Art.
Like Dada's Boys before it, Childish Things has its origins in dada and surrealism, but this new exhibition includes no dada or surrealist art. Rather, it looks at a post-dada/ surrealist interest in toys as signifiers of what Hopkins terms a 'dark poetics' of childhood, bringing together the work of seven senior and historically-significant artists from Britain and the United States.

Edinburgh Visual Arts and Crafts Exhibition

Closing date: Monday 14 March 2011

In 2000, the City of Edinburgh Council, in partnership with the Scottish Arts Council (now Creative Scotland) launched a scheme of funding to support individual artists and makers based in the city.  Formerly known as the Edinburgh Visual Arts and Crafts Award Scheme (EVAAC), the Visual Arts Awards: Edinburgh (VAA) and Craft Maker Awards: Edinburgh (CMA) schemes have supported over 200 proposals to develop new work and creative practice.

To celebrate the ongoing success of these schemes, the City of Edinburgh Council's Culture and Sport Division will present an exhibition highlighting some of the supported individuals and their work at the City Art Centre from November 2011 to February 2012.

To qualify for selection, artists and makers must have received funding between the financial years 2000/01 and 2009/10 from at least one of the following schemes - Edinburgh Visual Arts and Crafts Award (EVAAC), Visual Arts Awards: Edinburgh (VAA) and/or Craft Maker Awards: Edinburgh (CMA).  Funded projects must have concluded and a final report submitted to and approved by the scheme administrator.

To request an application package, or to discuss the opportunity further, please contact Tracy Scodellaro, Arts Officer, on 0131 529 6720 or at tracy.scodellaro@edinburgh.gov.uk.
