Discover the Victorian origins of some of the most familiar Christmas customs such as sending cards, giving presents and decorating trees and make your own Palace advent calendar to take home. Christmas at the National Museums of Scotland

The National Museum of Scotland has plenty to get you in the Christmas spirit this year: from choirs and handbell ringing to the annual Christmas Art Competition. The wicked Snow Queen plans to turn everything to winter, starting with one little boy, Kay, who falls under her spell... but Kay's friend Gerda undertakes a brave journey to the Snow Queen's ice palace at the top of the world, where she joins forces with the sun spirit and the beasts of the forest (as well as reindeers and polar bears) to save her friend Kay - and the whole world - from eternal chill! Lyceum Youth Theatre (LYT)The Lyceum Youth Theatre was established in 1999 and since then has delivered weekly classes for young people aged from 5 - 18 years, as well as holiday courses, workshops and performances. It is one of Scotland's biggest youth theatre companies and has established a name for itself as a producer of high quality contemporary theatre, by young people. Both in regular drama sessions and a range of special projects, young people are given the opportunity to develop their skills and learn from experienced tutors, leading to professional standard performances. The new LYT term starts week beginning Monday 10 January. Available spaces in LYT are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. When the wicked demon Vainglorious falls in love with Jill, the loveliest lass in Musselburgh, he is furious to discover that she is already smitten with Prince Jack, who lives in Tranent Castle with his cook, Mother Goose, and his jester, Muddles. Appealing to her conceit, Vainglorious casts a spell on Mother Goose (known to her friends as Gertie Ga Ga). Then he enlists her help to split up Jack and Jill with promises of fame and beauty. Will the silly old bird be able to resist? She will if daft joker Muddles has a say in it.
