Seventy Impressive Black-and-White Drawings by Roy Lichtenstein on View at Albertina

EPA/HANS KLAUS TECHT.

VIENNA.- The 1960s marked a dramatic change of direction in the art of Roy Lichtenstein: while his earlier works consisted mainly of paintings of American history and the American West, in 1961 he turned to black-and-white drawings. Inspired by advertising and media illustrations as well as by comic strips, Lichtenstein created about seventy impressive black-and-white drawings between 1961 and 1968. These were completely new in terms of subject and style. In the same period, the artist also made numerous black-and-white paintings, whose subjects were very close to those of the drawings. The latter, however, are not to be understood as preparatory studies for the works on canvas; they much rather form a separate, individual group of artworks. The Albertina presents the black-and-white drawings in conjunction with selected black-and-white paintings for the first time in this special exhibition. ... More

Nefertiti's Bust will Stay in German Capital Says Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit

BERLIN (REUTERS).- Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit said Friday that Germany would not send the bust of an ancient Egyptian queen to modern-day Egypt because it was obtained nearly a century ago. Wowereit defended a German foundation's possession of Nefertiti's bust that has been in Berlin since 1913 after a dispute flared this week over its ownership between the foundation and Egypt's antiquities chief. "Nefertiti is staying in Berlin," Wowereit told mass-circulation daily Bild. "Nothing was looted. There was a fair agreement and there's no reason to send her back to Egypt." The 3,400-year-old bust is one of Berlin's top tourist attractions with one million viewers going annually to Berlin's Neues Museum to see it. It was found by German archaeologist Ludwig Borchardt south of Cairo in 1912. Egypt's antiquities chief, Zahi Hawass, said that the bust, famed for its almond-shaped eyes and swan-like neck, was passed off ... More

CAIRO (REUTERS).- Army units secured the Egyptian Museum in central Cairo against possible looting on Friday, protecting a building with spectacular pharaonic treasures such as the death mask of the boy king Tutankhamun, state TV said. The news follows a day of violent anti-government protests in Cairo and other cities. Some of the most violent scenes in four days of protests have been in squares and streets close to the museum building. It was also broadcast as reports of looting of some government buildings emerged. One Reuters photographer said looters had broken into a ruling party building near the museum and were walking out with furniture, computers and other items. Well-known Egyptian film director Khaled Youssef had earlier called on the army to ensure the museum was protected, in comments to the Al Arabiya television channel. "I am calling on the Egyptian army to ... More

By: Brett Zongker, Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP).- A liberal group is calling for Smithsonian Secretary Wayne Clough to step down, and the board of the Smithsonian's Hirshhorn Museum is complaining that Clough bowed to political pressure in removing a video from an exhibit. Clough became the target of a censorship debate after he removed a video depicting ants crawling on a crucifix from the National Portrait Gallery exhibit, "Hide/Seek," after a Catholic group complained. Michael Keegan, president of People for the American Way, called Friday for Clough to be removed when the Smithsonian Board of Regents meets Monday. The Hirshhorn Museum board also issued an open letter saying that bowing to pressure harms the Smithsonian's integrity. The group Art Positive plans to protest at the Smithsonian on Monday. ... Rembrandt Portrait, Which Sold at Christie's in 2009, to Be Offered for $47 Million

Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn (Leiden 1606 – 1669 Amsterdam), Portrait of a man with arms akimbo, 1658. Oil on canvas , 42.25 x 34.25 in. (107.4 x 87 cm).

LONDON (REUTERS).- A Rembrandt portrait, one of the last works from the Dutch master's late career still in private hands, will be offered for sale at the TEFAF Maastricht art fair later this year for $47 million. "Portrait of a Man With Arms Akimbo" was under the auctioneer's hammer as recently as 2009, when it fetched an artist record price of 20.2 million pounds, or $33 million, at Christie's in London. The buyer at the time was reported to be casino owner Stephen Wynn, although others, including Manhattan dealer Otto Naumann, were interested, according to New York Times. It is Naumann who is now exhibiting the work at the fair, according to PR company Cawdell Douglas, which represents TEFAF. The event rums from March 18-27. Since 2009, it has been "transformed by cleaning and can now be seen in its full glory," a Cawdell Douglas statement said. Art experts said the sharply higher asking price could reflect both the cleaning ... More

By: Mike Collett-White

LONDON (REUTERS).- By replacing a traditional survey of 20th century British sculpture with a "provocative set of juxtapositions," London's Royal Academy has made both friends and enemies among the critics. Some welcomed what the gallery called a "fresh approach," but others attacked it for omitting several important British and foreign sculptors. Most outspoken was Andrew Graham-Dixon, writing in the Sunday Telegraph's Seven magazine in his no-star review: "This lamentable exhibition has no coherence, no clear purpose and fails to mention many of Britain's best sculptors of the past 100 years." Laura Cumming, of The Observer, drew attention to the absence of pop art, and the lack of "advanced conceptualism." "And if (Carl) Andre's 'Equivalent VIII' can make the cut, though the American's minimalism never took ... More

Robert Bowman Modern presents works by the key modern British sculptors.

LONDON.- Robert Bowman Modern is holding a selling exhibition of Modern British Sculpture. On view until April 7, 2011, the show coincides with that of their neighbour the Royal Academy who is hosting its first 20th-Century British Sculpture exhibition for 30 years. The exhibition features a number of works by Jacob Epstein (1880-1959), one of the leading pioneers of Modern British Sculpture. In his lifetime he championed many of the concepts central to modernist sculpture, including ‘truth to material’, direct carving, and inspiration from so-called primitive art, all of which became central to twentieth-century practice. Among the highlights of the exhibition is a rare Epstein maquette for ‘Rush of Green’ commissioned ... More

Marisa Merz, “La danza delle ore”, January 27 – March 5, 2011. Exhibition View: Gladstone Gallery; Brussels. Courtesy Gladstone Gallery.

BRUSSELS.- Gladstone Gallery presents an exhibition of works by Marisa Merz. Born in Turin, Italy, Merz was a central figure and the only woman associated with the Arte Povera movement of the late 1960s and 70s. Known for her unusual use of materials such as copper-wire, clay, and wax, Merz’s works reflect the poetic sensibility that delicately entwines her vision of art and life. Consisting of drawings and sculptures, this exhibition continues to investigate Merz’s unique and intimate vision of finding meaning within the possibilities of the everyday. One of the most significant themes to arise from Merz’s oeuvre is the image of the face, which is centered upon the essential and universal question of being. In these works, the figure of the face emerges as a vestige of the eternal human spirit, capturing a single and infinite moment of appearing and becoming. Composed of fleeting arabesque lines, Merz& ... More

Jefferson's Monticello Makes Ale Inspired by Past
By: Zinie Chen Sampson, Associated Press
RICHMOND, VA (AP) Thomas Jefferson is renowned for his many interests, including architecture, horticulture and inventing gadgets. Among the third president's lesser-known pursuits was making beer, and modern-day visitors to his mountaintop estate at Monticello can soon get a taste of the past. The Thomas Jefferson Foundation says it's working with Starr Hill Brewery in Crozet to offer Monticello Reserve Ale, inspired by what was produced and consumed regularly at Monticello. Brewing beer was among the plantation's important activities, and the drink was one of the "table liquors" served with meals, Monticello officials said. Starr Hill's master brewer Mark Thompson will brew Monticello Reserve Ale using a combination of lightly hopped wheat and corn, as Jefferson did in his day. Local ingredients will be used, including some ... More

Unmarked Graves Found at Veteran Cemetery in Mississippi
By: Holbrook Mohr, Associated Press
VICKSBURG, MISS (AP).- Authorities said Thursday they fear dozens of veterans could lie in unmarked graves at a Mississippi military cemetery after they found two unidentified coffins and used radar to detect other possible plots. The two coffins and other potential graves were found in sections of Vicksburg National Military Cemetery that were opened in the 1940s for World War I, World War II and Korean War veterans, National Park Service officials said at a news conference. The sprawling cemetery is the final resting place for more than 18,000 veterans, mostly Union soldiers from the Civil War. The problems were discovered after workers preparing a burial site for a World War II veteran found a coffin in August. Another coffin was found nearby. The veteran was buried elsewhere in the cemetery and the graves were left alone, authorities said. The cemetery stopped offering burials in 1961, except for veterans who had prior arrangements. Mass Sketchers Turn the World to Art in a Day
By Rebekah Curtis
LONDON (REUTERS).- People and their pencils from New Zealand to New York are hitting the streets four times a year with a common aim: Turn the world into art for one day. The 30th global "SketchCrawl," a worldwide, day-long drawing binge that takes place four times a year produced a gallery of images posted on website SketchCrawl.com this month. The images depict life across the world through a day of art. From penciled snowscapes of Iceland to watercolor palm trees in Hawaii and sketches of people chatting over drinks in a Norwegian café to a bustling coffee shop in South Africa. "It's so satisfying seeing other corners of the earth, corners we might never see, observed and captured by a fellow artist's pencil," website founder Enrico Casarosa told Reuters. The story artist, who works on animation and comics in San Francisco, conceived the idea of sketch "marathons" after going on a pub crawl for a fri ... More
