Winter/Spring Film Series Bigger Than Life Friday, January 7 | 8 pm Museum Auditorium
Happy New Year! We begin our 11th Winter Film Series with the monthlong "shadow" portion of our "Norman Rockwell: Sunshine and Shadow" series. Bigger Than Life is a film once overlooked but now considered a masterpiece of 1950s angst. Like our concluding Fall Series film, Pleasantville, it uses color in an expressionistic way. Bigger's palette is dull brown and gray . . . but a red jacket, an edgy purple pill bottle, and a dangerously orange dress warn that the family unit can be the ultimate haven—or the ultimate peril.
Bigger Than Life (1956) Directed by Nicholas Ray. James Mason, Barbara Rush, Walter Matthau. (95 min.)
Emotional spasms wrack a suburban paradise when a schoolteacher is prescribed the miracle drug cortisone for pain. His wife witnesses “a handful of hope became a fistful of hell” (as the tagline put it). Rebel without a Cause director Ray imagines “Father Knows Best reconfigured as Greek tragedy” (Scott Foundas, Village Voice). New Cinemascope print from Fox.
