Make Way for Tomorrow

Leo McCarey was a comedy genius who directed movies for Laurel and Hardy, the Marx Brothers, Mae West, and W. C. Fields. When he accepted his 1937 Best Director Oscar for the Cary Grant–Irene Dunne screwball The Awful Truth, he said, "Thanks, but you gave it to me for the wrong picture." He thought he should have won for Make Way for Tomorrow, this week’s film and McCarey’s personal favorite. It’s an unusual love story—even for today—of two people who have been happily married for 50 years.

Make Way for Tomorrow
(1937) Directed by Leo McCarey. Beulah Bondi, Victor Moore, Thomas Mitchell. (90 min.)

Their house foreclosed before the days of Social Security, a destitute elderly couple must rely on their beastly children. Renowned for his mastery of comedy and romance, McCarey crafts a simple tale filled with sly humor and heart-tugging drama, a simple tale that Orson Welles said “would make a stone cry.” Paramount Archive print.
