STUTTGART.- For museums the exchange with private collectors is becoming increasingly important. A new series of exhibitions in the Kunstmuseum aims to make the engagement of these art patrons visible. The first show presents Ute and Rudolf Scharpff, who have been collecting for over fifty years and in the 1960s initially concentrated on the Nouveaux Réalistes. Today their collection comprises art by the Zero Group and German and American contemporary painting. Included are works by well-known artists such as Yves Klein, Lucio Fontana, Piero Manzoni, Franz Ackermann, André Butzer, Albert Oehlen, Neo Rauch, Christopher Wool, and Jeff Koons. Ute and Rufolf Scharpff are interested particularly in young artists whose works deal critically with the present. Irish Artist Jim Fitzpatrick Bids to Copyright Revolutionary Che Guevara Image

"It's not about making money, it's to make sure that it is used properly...".

By: Conor Humphries

DUBLIN (REUTERS).- The Irish artist whose poster of Latin American revolutionary Che Guevara became one of the most reproduced images of the 20th century, said he has decided to copyright the image to block "crass commercial" use. Jim Fitzpatrick produced the classic red and black print of the long-haired Che wearing a soldier's beret with a single star in 1968 and distributed it copyright-free for use by revolutionary groups in Europe. It was quickly adopted by left-wing students, whose t-shirts and posters helped turn the image into a global sign of rebellion. But the image of the Marxist revolutionary, who helped bring Fidel Castro to power in 1959, has since been co-opted by makers of mugs, baseball caps and even lingerie. The image is emblazoned across Cuban-themed restaurants around the world. "It's not about making money, it's to make sure that it is used properly... that it's not used ... More
King Tutankhamun's Stolen Dad Found; Egypt Sites to Reopen on Sunday

By: Christopher Torchia, Associated Press

CAIRO (AP).- Egypt said it will reopen historical sites to tourism on Sunday as it sought to revive a key industry shattered in the turmoil that ousted President Hosni Mubarak. Archaeologists were cheered by the recovery of the most important artifact stolen from Cairo's Egyptian Museum, a rare statue of King Tut's father. A 16-year-old anti-government protester found the statue of the Pharaoh Akhenaten next to a garbage can and his family returned it, the antiquities ministry said. But damage to Egypt's heritage may have been greater than previously thought, as officials reported new cases of break-ins at archaeological sites. Zahi Hawass, head of the Ministry of State for Antiquities, had reported a total of 18 missing museum artifacts, three of which were found on the museum grounds, possibly abandoned by looters making their escape. The antiquities ministry ... More

Steir’s last show with Cheim & Read was in 2007. Born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1940, Pat Steir received her BFA from Pratt Institute in 1962. Her work has been shown almost continually since graduation. After debuting in a few group shows, including Drawings at the Museum of Modern Art, she had her first solo exhibition at Terry Dintenfass Gallery in 1964. Though with her early work Steir was loosely allied with Conceptual Art and Minimalism, she is best-recognized for dripped, splashed and poured “waterfall” paintings which she first started in the late 1980s. As Larson explores in her catalogue essay for the show, Steir’s continuous search for the essence of painting guided her to John Cage, who she met in 1980, and Agnes Ma ... More

Metro Pictures Presents Croatian Artist David Maljkovic's Latest Works "Recalling Frames"

David Maljkovic, Recalling Frames, 2010. Black and white photograph, 41 3/4 x 54 3/4 inches, 106 x 139.1 cm. Unique print. Courtesy of the Artist and Metro Pictures.

NEW YORK, N.Y.- Croatian artist David Maljkovic's latest works, Recalling Frames, are photomontages that interweave still images from Orson Welles' film The Trial, shot in Zagreb in 1962, with the artist's own contemporary photographs of the filming locations. Welles' haunting exploration of the terror of faceless bureaucracy was set against the city's Cold War-era Modernist buildings, to which Maljkovic returned to carefully photograph the sites from the same dramatic angles shown in the film. Spliced together from black-and-white negative prints, the resulting unique prints conflate five decades of aesthetic and ideological change. This is his second one-person exhibition at Metro Pictures on view from February 19 to April 2. In some of Maljkovic's works, sections of austere concrete architecture are seamlessly ... More

Rare Anti-Communist Comics at Heritage Auctions
DALLAS, TX.- A superb collection of high-grade anti-communist comic books from the 1950s, from The Collection of Todd Warren, will make for an esoteric and interesting corner of Heritage Auctions’ Feb. 24-25 Signature® Vintage Comics & Comic Art Auction. All are being sold without reserves. “The youth of America was seen as fair game for the ever-gathering storm of Soviet and Chinese Communism in the 1950s,” said Steve Borock, Consignment Director at Heritage, “and concerned patriots wanted to make sure the nation’s future was not compromised by those dark forces.” How better to combat those nefarious influences than through comics books, which every kid in the 1950s was religiously reading. Add in the bonus that these comics were free – a bonus to any kid who save nickels and dimes to buy the latest Superman or Batman – and publishers figured they had direct access to those impressionable yo ... The Other King's Speech Goes Under the Hammer at Bonhams
LONDON.- A remarkable hand-written speech delivered by Charles II in Perth on 6 October 1650 is for auction at Bonhams in London on 29 March as part of the Roy Davids sale of Papers and Portraits. Written down the side of one page and folded into four panels to make it easier to deliver, the speech takes the form of an apology to members of the Scottish Parliament for a bizarre episode in which Charles had attempted to escape from their control. The King’s handwriting shows unmistakable signs of the pressure he was under. It is estimated at between £8,000-12,000. The Scottish Parliament recognised Charles II the legitimate King soon after the execution of his father Charles I in 1649 and he arrived in Scotland in June the following year to reclaim the throne. The Scottish Parliament was dominated by Covenanters - Protestants whose objective was to spread Presbyterianism throughout Britain. They forced Charles, reluctantl ... More

$55,813 Carved Ivory Vase Tops Garth's Decorative Arts Auction
DELAWARE, OH- An impressive early 20th century Chinese carved ivory vase was the top lot of Garth’s Auctioneers and Appraisers’ auction of Asian, Continental, & American Furniture, Decorative Arts, & Fine Art on January 29, 2011. On display the week prior to the sale, the 14 ½” tall vase, adorned with intricate, continuous carving of a banquet scene around the circumference, drew quite a bit of attention from those visiting Garth’s gallery, as well as many phone calls from Europe and Asia. The vase was the highlight of a fresh-to-the-market group of ivories and textiles deaccessioned from a major Ohio institution which no longer found the material germane to its mission. The Asian material, which had been collected many years before landing at the institution via a generous donation, was clearly several steps above the typical, mid-century trinkets brought back by GIs in WWII. The buzz surrounding the vase ... More

Jouin Manku Designs Installation for "Set in Style" Exhibition
NEW YORK, NY.- French partners Patrick Jouin and Sanjit Manku of Jouin Manku studio designed a site-specific installation for the "Set in Style: The Jewelry of Van Cleef & Arpels" exhibition, which draws on the domestic history of the 1902 Carnegie Mansion, home to the Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum. The exhibition will be on view from Feb. 18 through June 5.The original function of the historic spaces will be highlighted through the studio's design, which Jouin says pays special attention to the "memories of the past." "It's a house where people were living; they were having dinner; they were sleeping; they were receiving friends," he said. "I thought it was interesting to reconnect the design of the exhibition with the history of the building, because Van Cleef & Arpels also has a long history." The designers' intention to evoke the building's past is clear in the dining room of the mansion. In a nod to the sumptuous dinners that the Carnegies' held with ... More
