New exhibitions for February


Riches of a City opens Saturday
 
February 5 - May 22, 2011
Riches of a City: Portland Collects celebrates arts patronage in Portland and offers a rare glimpse behind closed doors, featuring more than 200 objects from private collections and revealing a variety of collecting interests and passions. For nearly a year the Museum's curators have been exploring local collections of photography, prints, drawings, silver, Asian art, European art, and modern and contemporary art, uncovering exceptional objects including works by Picasso, Lautrec, Miro, and Warhol.


Member Preview Day
Members-only preview day is Friday, February 4, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Be among the first in Portland to see Riches of a City before it opens to the general public.


Community, Collecting, and the Future
Sunday, February 6, 2 p.m.
Join Chief Curator and Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art Bruce Guenther for an illustrated lecture considering the influences of the community and patrons on the Museum's collection.

$5 members, $12 non-members. Seating is limited. Advance tickets available online and on-site.


Reminiscences of John Yeon as a Collector
Sunday, February 27, 2 p.m.
Collector and Museum Trustee Richard Louis Brown, a long-time close friend of John Yeon, will share memories about how Yeon built his art collection.

This exhibition features three recent large-scale sculptures and a selection of drawings by Los Angeles-based sculptor Peter Shelton. Manifestly precise in execution and explicitly physical, the works are focused on the interrelationships between image, surface, and prevailing theories of abstraction.

APEX: Geraldine Ondrizek
February 12 - May 15, 2011
Scientific processes are made both visually and aurally articulate in Geraldine Ondrizek's three restrained multi-sensory installation works.

Learn simple tips and techniques to make art approachable and enjoyable to investigate as a family.

From A to B and Black Again
Sunday, February 13, 2 p.m.
Artist and curator Arnold Kemp will give his personal observations about what it is to be an African American artist in the 21st century through specific examples of artists and their work in Safety in Numbers?.

34th Portland International Film Festival
 
February 10-26, 2011
Showcasing 131 films from more than three dozen countries, the 34th Portland International Film Festival (PIFF) is bigger and better than ever. In addition to presenting critically acclaimed works by emerging and established directors, PIFF 34 features special programming for students and families, fascinating new documentaries, submissions for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar, award-winning local and international shorts, new works by Oregon filmmakers, and a Hispanic Film Showcase.
