Winter/Spring Film Series Brighton Rock Friday, February 11 | 8 pm Museum Auditorium
This week we cross the pond for a superb film noir from Britain that’s not available on DVD. The Daily Mirror warned in 1947, "No woman will want to see it. No parents will want their children to see it." This prompted novelist-screenwriter Graham Greene (a devout Catholic) to reply in a published letter: "Your critic's disgust is an indication that one purpose of the film—the presentation of a character possessed by evil—has been successfully achieved." The baby-faced gangster Pinky is played by Richard Attenborough, yes, Lord Attenborough, Oscar-winning director of Gandhi.
Brighton Rock (1947) Directed by John Boulting. Richard Attenborough, Hermione Baddeley, William Hartnell. (92 min.)
Pinky, a vicious hood, tries to cover up a rival’s murder in this British noir set in the seediest back alleys of the resort town of Brighton. Adapted by Graham Greene from his novel. “Richard Attenborough will scare the bejesus out of you” (Michael Sragow, Baltimore Sun). Restored 35mm print from Rialto Pictures.
Upcoming Friday, February 18: Burt Lancaster and Yvonne de Carlo star in Criss Cross.
