Winter/Spring Film Series Criss Cross Friday, February 18 | 8 pm Museum Auditorium
"The Fury of Love Untamed! The Fury of Hatred Unchecked," warned the trailer for this classic LA noir. The hero of such films is usually a poor sap, completely under the control of a powerfully wicked woman. But virile Burt Lancaster is nobody's fool–except his sensuous ex-wife’s. The foreboding shadows, the flashback, the cynical voice-over: it's all there, lovingly filmed in the streets of the now-vanished Bunker Hill neighborhood of Los Angeles.
Criss Cross (1949) Directed by Robert Siodmak. Burt Lancaster, Yvonne de Carlo, Dan Duryea. (88 min.)
A chump (Lancaster in one of his earliest films) and a temptress, divorced but still passionately entwined, become entrapped in a security truck robbery doomed by a double double cross. Working-class Los Angeles is the setting for what Rough Guide to Film Noir calls “the most underrated noir of the classic era.” Universal Studios Archive print.
