Winter/Spring Film Series Quai des Orfèvres Friday, February 25 | 8 pm Museum Auditorium
Director Henri-Georges Clouzot is sometimes called the French Alfred Hitchcock, a reputation based on two nail-biting suspense films, Diabolique and The Wages of Fear. This detective film/noir/musical was not taken seriously in the United States 60 years ago, in spite of saucy Suzy Delair and her "Petit Tralala." The film (out of print on DVD) is a fascinating glimpse of postwar France as well as a portrayal of sexual desire and unconventional families; it challenged American film censorship of the day.
Quai des Orfèvres (1947) Written and directed by Henri-Georges Clouzot. Louis Jouvet, Suzy Delair, Bernard Blier, Simone Renant. (106 min.)
A sultry music hall coquette has a rendezvous with a sleazy promoter, and when he winds up très mort, her long-suffering hubby is the prime suspect. Clouzot explores the shadows of Paris. “A knockout . . . You can almost smell the cigarette smoke drifting over rain-drenched streets” (Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times). Restored print from Rialto Pictures.
