MILAN.- Vittorio Sgarbi returns to Milan to present a major new exhibition that illustrates the birth of the genius Caravaggio. Reconstructing his artistic training, from Simone Peterzano to the Veneto and Lombard masters, this fascinating show examines the precursors and contemporaries of Michelangelo Merisi (1571-1610), highlighting the works that the artist would actually have seen and what he would have witnessed in the artistic climate that dominated the area from Venice to Milan before he moved to Rome, which according to the most recent studies was likely to have been around 1595-96. Curated by Vittorio Sgarbi, the exhibition “The Eyes of Caravaggio. His Formative Years between Venice and Milan”is produced and organised by Arthemisia Group in collaboration with the Museo Diocesano di Milano, promoted by Regione Lombardia and staged thanks to the vital support of Banca Popolare di Milano and Terna. By: Monika Scislowska, The Associated Press

WARSAW (AP).- Chopin experts are trying to determine whether a photo that has surfaced in Poland is really of the 19th century composer. If authentic, it would be only the third known photograph of Chopin, who lived from 1810-1849. Wladyslaw Zuchowski, a photographer and gallery owner in Gdansk, said Thursday that he bought the daguerreotype, the earliest type of photograph, from a private owner in Scotland in December. The framed copper and silver image bears the imprinted year of 1849, when Chopin died in Paris, and the name of Louis Auguste Bisson, a French photographer who took at least one photograph of Chopin during the pianist's lifetime. On the frame is attached a piece of paper with Frederic Chopin's name. Zuchowski said he believes it might come from a collection gathered by Jane Stirling, a Scottish ... More

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (AP).- A museum volunteer has unearthed what the Smithsonian Institution believes to be the first — and perhaps only — color photographs of San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake and fire that nearly leveled the city. The six never-published images were snapped by photography innovator Frederick Eugene Ives several months after the April 1906 "Great Quake," the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Most were taken from the roof of the hotel where Ives stayed during an October 1906 visit. They were stowed amid other items donated by Ives' son, Herbert, and discovered in 2009 by National Museum of American History volunteer Anthony Brooks while he was cataloguing the collection. Although hand-colored photographs of the quake's destruction have surfaced before, Ives' work is ... More

The exhibition is on view from March 10 and runs until April 1, 2011. “Now, however, I maintain that just as the concept of the military avant-garde has been ‘lost,’ because of changes in methods of warfare, the avant-garde in the contemporary art world, has also lost its edge.” — Dimitri Kozyrev. The exhibition Last One shows Kozyrev’s works from the artist’s two latest series Lost Edge and Last One, in which his leitmotif is the ruin or fragment. The exhibition, on view until March 26th, consists of constructed white reliefs and tonal drawings and prints. The pieces in the exhibition display Reynolds’ forty-year investigation into the interplay of the horizontal and vertical, shadow and light. These works, created during the past decade, reveal the continuing exploration by the artist of form, rhythm, structure and equilibrium. At first approach the works convey an austere, conscious formality, which in less able hands than Reynolds’ could create a barrier to the viewer. However, Reynolds, through a lifelong contemplation and exploration of tonality and structure, has the ability to create pieces which transcend the visual and touch upon the subconscious, rhythmic pulse within, inviting us to stay engaged with the work. Though highly structured an ... More

PROVIDENCE, RI (AP).- A former art dealer who prosecutors say defrauded investors of $6 million has taken the witness stand in his trial, saying his accountant directed his business dealings. Federal prosecutors rested their case in the trial of Rocco DeSimone, who defense attorneys put on the stand Thursday. DeSimone is accused of inducing friends and others to invest in inventions he falsely said major international corporations had offered to buy for millions of dollars. He has pleaded not guilty to mail fraud and other charges. DeSimone has placed blame on his accountant, Ronald Rodrigues, who he says handled the financial side of trying to sell the inventions. LONDON (REUTERS).- The remains of 138 indigenous people from the Torres Strait Islands are set to be repatriated after they were removed at the behest of a missionary during the 19th century, London's Natural History Museum said on Thursday. The museum agreed to return the skeletal remains to the islands, situated between the northern coast of Australia and Papua New Guinea, after holding talks with indigenous leaders and the Australian government over the last 18 months. Ned David, a representative of the Torres Strait Islands (TSI) community, said islanders were "deeply touched" by the decision to repatriate the ancestral remains, most of which were removed from a cave locals held sacred. "The return of our ancestors... is a key step in the healing process for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from injustices committed against our people in the past," he said in a statement on Thursday.
