MUNICH.- The Alte Pinakothek welcomes a very special guest to its 175th anniversary: Johannes Vermeer’s “Woman Holding a Balance” from the National Gallery of Art in Washington. The exhibition is on display until June 16, 2011. In the early 19th century, this exquisite masterpiece once formed part of the exceptional private collection amassed by the first king of Bavaria, Max I Joseph (1756-1825). He focused almost exclusively on 17th-century Dutch masters, mostly landscapes and genre paintings. To these he added the works of contemporary painters in Munich who were inspired by such Old Masters. In 1826, one year after the death of Max Joseph, the private royal collection was sold at auction. Some exceptional works were acquired for the state collections; others found their way to the Alte Pinakothek via roundabout routes – as part of Ludwig I’s collec ... More

JOHANNESBURG (AP).- Scientists say they have discovered the first fossil of a dinosaur in Angola, and that it's a new creature, heralding a research renaissance in a country slowly emerging from decades of war. A paper published Wednesday in the Annals of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences describes a long-necked, plant-eating sauropod, among the largest creatures ever to have walked the earth. The international team that found and identified the fossilized forelimb bone say it is from a previously unknown dinosaur, citing unique skeletal characteristics. The fossil was found along with fish and shark teeth in what would have been a sea bed 90 million years ago, leading its discoverers to believe the dinosaur might have been washed into the sea and torn apart by ancient sharks. The new dinosaur has been dubbed Angolatitan adamastor — ... More

NEW YORK, N.Y.- Sue Scott Gallery presents Paper A-Z, on view from March 16th through April 22, 2011. Featuring more than seventy five established, mid-career and emerging artists from around the country, this exhibition showcases multidisciplinary approaches to works on paper that examine and celebrate this basic language of the artistic process. “A-Z” implies linearity, but the heart of the show is a constellation of parts that drifts off the alphabet, a collection of phonemes—gaffs, folds, stutters, perfect pronunciations and alliterations. Drawing naturally emerges from an immediate relationship of the artist's hand with the instrument or medium. This arrangement can invite risk and produce spontaneous and often unintentional results. This is drawing’s clearest articulation: the serif ‘a’ of the alphabet. This exhibition also looks beyond this customary notion of drawing, while pre ... More
