MUNICH.- In this exhibition on Emil Nolde (1867-1956) at the Pinakothek der Moderne, the public will once again be able to view the 24 seldom-seen watercolours in the possession of the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung, that have not been on show for a long time. These celebrated and equally well-loved sheets by the famous German Expressionist, which cover all the subjects otherwise found in his oeuvre, can only be exhibited very rarely due to their extreme light sensitivity. Nolde turned to watercolour early in his career. He developed his characteristic style of applying paint in the wet-on-wet technique between 1900 and 1910. From 1911, he used highly absorbent Japanese paper which made the colours run into each other all the more. The range the subjects found in his other work is also mirrored in his watercolour paintings. These are not sketches for works in oil, but form a part of his oeuvre in their own right. AMSTERDAM (AP).- From threadbare armchairs to marble mantel clocks, garden furniture to a silver pocket knife, thousands of the late Dutch Queen Juliana's possessions are going under the hammer in an attic sale fit for a king. The four-day auction by Sotheby's started Monday and was stirring interest among serious collectors as well as die-hard Dutch royalty fans of the popular House of Orange. A total of 1,725 lots gathered from seven royal palaces were being auctioned with the proceeds going to four charities one chosen by each of Juliana's four daughters. "It's really like a royal attic sale," auctioneer Mark Grol told The Associated Press. "With paintings to prints, ceramics, silver, furniture. Just basically everything you would find in a palace." The sale is intended to clear out unwanted belongings that were left ... More | | Leading British Art Collector Charles Saatchi's Ex-Wife Sells Off Art at Christie's

LONDON (REUTERS).- Kay Saatchi, ex-wife of leading British art patron Charles, is selling off part of her own collection at a Christie's auction in June and expects to raise up to 3.4 million pounds ($5.4 million). The highlight of the sale, which will form part of the post-war and contemporary art evening auction in London on June 28, is a larger-than-life yet disturbingly realistic model of a seated and naked baby by Ron Mueck. "Big Baby," which measures nearly three feet high and is the Australian artist's first documented work, dates from 1996 and is estimated to be worth 800,000-1.2 million pounds. A series of five drawings by veteran British painter Lucian Freud dating from the 1940s is expected to fetch between 770,000 and 1.2 million pounds combined. Christie's said it was the most important group of works on paper by the artist ever to come to auction. The third main lot is a painting by Paula Rego, "Looking Back," ... AMSTERDAM.- The Dutch landscape was largely created by man, except for the sandy beaches and dunes along the coast, which were mostly created by nature. In the seventeenth century, when the Netherlands was the most urbanised region in Europe, the dunes offered a welcome refuge for the inhabitants of the overcrowded cities. Among those who sought refuge were 17th-century artists such as Goltzius and Rembrandt. Their works portray not only the entertaining qualities of the dunes, but also their grand, quiet and rugged nature. From 15 March to 20 June 2011, the Rijksmuseum is exhibiting a selection of more than twenty of its most beautiful drawings and prints of dune landscapes in the 17th century. Huigen Leeflang (Rijksmuseum Curator of Prints): The dunes were the birthplace of Dutch landscape art. Its remarkable that the way we experience the dunes has changed little in all those centuries. LONDON.- This summer the National Gallery displays 51 paintings from a major private collection, most of which have never been seen in the UK before, and are rarely on public view. 'Forests, Rocks, Torrents' draws on the collection of Asbjørn Lunde, an American who has formed the worlds leading private collection of Norwegian and Swiss landscape paintings, primarily of the 19th century. British audiences are well aware of the landscape tradition of Constable and Turner. This landmark exhibition introduces skilled and innovative practitioners of this discipline from the same period but from elsewhere in Europe, many of whom enjoyed great reputations during their lifetimes. The paintings are of two principal kinds: small-scale landscape oil sketches and finished paintings, some very large. The works demonstrate the similarities of the Norwegian and ... VALENCIA.- The IVAM presents a retrospective exhibition of the sculpture Baltasar Lobo, on display until May 1, 2011. The exhibition gathers 92 works between sculptures and paintings that represent the different stages of his creative production from the forties to his last works in the nineties. It is a complete perspective of a legacy that has been shown in museums and public spaces in France, Spain, Germany, Austria and Venezuela. His sculptures on a medium and large scale are characterized by perfectly polished surfaces in which the light slides and goes through the corporeal space. Using materials such as marble, alabaster, granite, wood and bronze, the Spanish sculptor directed his oeuvre towards the creation of a language of abstraction, but keeping the human figure as the cornerstone of his creation. On the occasion of the exhibition, the IVAM has published a catalogue that contains all the works displayed and texts on Bal ... Shaggy Land on view through April 2, 2011. The exhibition includes large scale paintings completed from 2008-2010. Colarusso paints the landscape and visions of the natural world, real and imagined, because it offers the moving experience of positioning ones place in the world. Embodying a long history in art and culture, landscape offers recognition, familiarity, and sometimes strangeness; a place apart. In Colarussos work, she suggests that we have limited access to the deep patterns of nature. We acknowledge environmental awareness as subtext, but that seems to put us further afield. In her work, Landscape, Nature, offers us a contemplated reality; no matter how beautiful or bleak the landscape may appear, we are aware of something else- something fugitive. Her paintings address this somethin ...
