For more than 10 years, The San Diego Museum of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego have presented this annual lecture event in honor of the unprecedented endowments that Jackie and Rea Axline bestowed on both institutions in 1999. This year, the Museum welcomes South African artist William Kentridge, who recently received the 26th Annual Kyoto Prize in Arts and Philosophy presented by the Inamori Foundation. Born in Johannesburg in 1955, Kentridge’s work addresses his country’s social issues and ongoing transformation. Although his films and drawings are not direct depictions of apartheid and its dismantling, his subjects and techniques are unmistakably informed by the complex historical, social and political contexts of his homeland. His technique metaphorically parallels the acts of effacement and remembrance that characterize South Africa’s post-apartheid state—a nation erasing, drafting and redrawing itself. Untitled from Weighing… and Wanting, a piece that originated during Kentridge’s 1998 MCASD residency, is on view in the Jacobs Gallery in La Jolla. Tickets may be purchased online or at either MCASD location. Seating for this event is limited. |
