Scarlet Street

“Sunday painter.” “Outsider artist.” One phrase disdainful, the other admiring. In Fritz Lang's compelling 1940s film noir, a posh gallery displays some unusual canvases (actually done by a well-known artist of the day, John Decker) attributed not to Edward G. Robinson’s unattractive character but to sultry Joan Bennett’s. What a bonanza: marketable images and a beautiful dame, even though she is the most unlikely artist ever. Shown with the musical short Jan Savitt and His Band. Archival prints from the Library of Congress.

Scarlet Street

(1945) Directed by Fritz Lang. Edward G. Robinson, Joan Bennett, Dan Duryea. (103 min.)

A meek company cashier, henpecked by his shrewish wife, escapes into his Sunday painting hobby. He becomes embroiled with a sleek femme fatale who slyly markets his outsider art as her own. The film was banned by the Legion of Decency. Its “mesmeric dark atmosphere and camerawork are still dazzling half a century later,” says film historian Patrick McGilligan.
