Uta Barth Photography in a New Light

The latest series by conceptual photographer Uta Barth, ...and to draw a bright white line with light, makes its debut at the Art Institute on May 14. The word "photograph" translates as "writing with light," and Barth applies the word quite literally, transforming a simple daily occurrence—the dance of a ribbon of light across curtains—into a nuanced exploration of perception and the passage of time. In a sequence of photographs, the artist creates a complex visual experience out of her own domestic setting. Be sure to catch the Artist Talk with Uta Barth on the opening night of the exhibition. Reservations are not required for this lecture.

Basket Master of Bamboo

The Art Institute invites you to experience a beautiful and varied exhibition—starting May 28—from one of the greatest living masters of bamboo basket-weaving. Since the early 1990s, Fujinuma Noboru's reputation as a great innovator of contemporary basket artistry has been firmly established. Fujinuma Noboru: Master of Bamboo showcases for the first time these elegant baskets, part of a gift to the Art Institute from the artist's personal collection.
