Renaissance Masterpiece Coming to Portland Art Museum | | La Bella: Titian's Woman in a Blue Dress November 25, 2011 January 29, 2012 This fall, the Portland Art Museum's popular Masterworks/Portland series continues with the presentation of an exceptional painting by the most celebrated artist of Renaissance Venice: Titian's La Bella (Woman in a Blue Dress). From the collection of the Galleria Palatina in Florence, the luminous painting is a classic portrait of a beautiful woman in a magnificent dress and luxurious accessories of the day. La Bella's blue gown is accented with gold embroidery with ruffles at the neckline and cuffs, and gold, ruby, and pearl jewelry accents her elegant presentation. In 2009, the Museum featured Raphael's La Velata (The Woman with a Veil), and with La Bella, Museum visitors can continue their exploration of Renaissance portraiture. As with Raphael's painting, mystery also surrounds the identity of La Bella; Titian painted the same subject in multiple portraits and there is speculation that La Bella is the same woman in Titian's landmark work Venus of Urbino, which was painted during the same period. Don't miss this once in a lifetime opportunity to see Titian's La Bella in Portland. | | Be our Guest, Bring a Guest | | Saturday, April 9, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday, April 10, noon-5 p.m. Members are invited to bring a friend for free during this very special weekend.
