NUREMBERG.- Bitter oranges and lemons are found in portraits since the 15th century. Varied meanings are tied up with the fruits. In the Baroque age, it was popular to symbolize the descent of a portrait subject from the Dutch ruling dynasty of Orange by a small fruit-bearing orange tree. Often a citrus fruit represented the social or moral status of the portrait subjects. But citrus fruits could also point to personal botanical preferences and to dream destinations in Southern climes. Many 17th century child portraits show the portrayed subjects with a citrus fruit in their hand and a dog by their side. According to the conception of the time, the child as the fruit of the parents gradually gained maturity - hinted at by the citrus fruit - through the upbringing, symbolized by the dog. Time and again citrus fruits were also associated with the subject of wedding, marriage and love. This traces back to the golden apples of the Hesperides which already in the classical myths wer ... One of three remaining Polaroid photos taken by Mary Moorman at the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963. Photo: Mary Moorman.
NEW YORK, NY (BUSINESS WIRE).- If you were alive on Nov. 22, 1963, you remember, or have been told, where you were when President John F. Kennedy was killed. Perhaps no one remembers better than Mary Moorman, who was just 15 feet from JFKs motorcade when gunshots rang out. Ms. Moorman, then 31 years old, stood poised with her Polaroid camera as the presidential limousine passed by and captured the most famous image of that most infamous day: the president being shot. Where exactly Ms. Moorman stood is a key piece of information that has been debated for nearly five decades. The answer has ramifications for a number of theories, including one that opines there are frames missing from the film shot by Abraham Zapruder. In contrast to her friend, Jean Hill, who leveraged her presence at the assassination into a career as a ... NEW YORK, NY.- Paul Kasmin Gallery presents Seven Months, a solo installation of over thirty ink drawings and one painting by the New York artist Jan Frank. The exhibition is on view from May 19 through June 18, 2011. Made over a period of seven months on handmade paper with ink and commercial correction fluid, the drawings in this portfolio range from near-literalism to near-abstraction. Their abstraction becomes intensified when, to use Jackson Pollocks words, Frank chooses to veil the imagery, by using white out to obscure sections of each drawing. The curator Dominique Nahas has described this process of addition and subtraction as a singular synthesis of deliberate method and high-risk intuition. By ... LONDON.- Why are women still marginalised by the art world? Does gender bring something different to the work itself or is it just politics? These are some of the key questions that form the foundations of the exhibition Women Make Sculpture at Pangolin London, on view from May 19 through June 18, 2011. Despite the huge success of a handful of sculptors such as Barbara Hepworth, Elisabeth Frink and Louise Bourgeois, women still find themselves under-represented in major blockbuster shows. A prime example is the Royal Academy s current exhibition Modern British Sculpture which has received so much criticism for leaving out established male sculptors such as Antony Gormley and Anish Kapoor. But what about the women? Is such a meagre selection really representative of the current state of British sculpture? Pangolin London thinks not. Coinciding with the centenary year of International Womens Day, ... More | | Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney to Re-Open in March 2012 After Major Redevelopment

More Freedom Riders Get Place in History 50 Years LaterMONTGOMERY, AL (AP).- Freedom Riders who were attacked in Alabama's capital city on May 20, 1961, returned 50 years later to be hailed as heroes and have a museum dedicated at the old bus station where they were confronted by an angry white mob. U.S. Rep. John Lewis, D-Georgia, said he teared up Friday when he walked through the old Greyhound station where he was beaten and knocked unconscious. "It says something about the distance we've come and the progress we've made in this state and nation," said Lewis, who participated in the rides. That change was evident in former Alabama Gov. John Patterson. In 1961, he called the Freedom Riders fools and agitators when they set out to integrate Southern bus stations. But the 89-year-old ex-governor welcomed them Friday and praised them for bringing needed changes. "It took a lot of nerve and guts to do what th ... More 'Miracle on the Hudson' Plane Preps for Final TripHARRISON, N.J. (AP).- The trays of food that never got served have been removed, along with some of the seat cushions and the mold from dried river mud. Aside from that, the damaged Airbus A320 jet is largely frozen in time from the day it splashed down safely on the Hudson River in 2009 and gave a country reeling from economic calamity something to cheer about. The US Airways jet has spent the last two years in a hangar just outside Newark at J. Supor and Sons, a company that specializes in large-scale salvage and moving projects. On Friday, crews continued preparations for the plane's final journey, to an aviation museum in Charlotte, N.C., where it will be on permanent display. The exhibition spans work from 1998 to the present, marking Claerbout's first solo museum show on the West Coast and the U.S. premiere of his recent piece The American Room (200910). Claerbout's striking video installations address the complex relations between the genres of photography and cinema. His "architecture of narrative" is based on his meticulous work with digital photography and video to explore an understanding of time and space that the artist describes as "omni-directional." The scenes evolve without traditional narrative direction, instead exploring temporality and the compression and suspension of a moment from a variety of perspectives. The artist ... More Royal Wedding Hat Sells for Over $130,000 on eBayLONDON (AP).- Auction site eBay says a bidder has paid 81,100 pounds ($131,648) for the silk bow hat worn by Princess Beatrice to last month's royal wedding. The silk hat caused a stir at the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton on April 29. Since then, it has been compared to antlers and a pretzel, and has been photoshopped into scores of unlikely scenarios on the Internet. Forty bidders vied for the prize, but eBay did not reveal the identity of the winner. The unusual design of the beige hat has sparked a Facebook fan page called "Princess Beatrice's ridiculous Royal Wedding hat," and one computer-altered picture showed President Barack Obama and his national security team all wearing the hat as they watched the commando raid on Osama bin Laden's compound in Pakistan. ...
