NEW YORK, NY.- Painted in 1964 at the heart of Andy Warhol's most historic period, Sixteen Jackies is a complex and extraordinarily rare declaration of the twin pedestals on which Warhol's artistic genius rest: ubiquitous public icons and serial imagery. A tour-de-force presentation of one of Warhol's most poignant images his well-known series of portraits of the First Lady, Jacqueline Kennedy, as seen by millions through the press coverage surrounding her husband's assassination Sixteen Jackies is also a powerful celebration of Warhol's inspired use of multiple image repetition as a thematic device. In the early 1960s, Warhol's rows of soup cans and movie stars were screened within a single canvas. With the Jackie paintings, Warhol for the first time created numbers of small panels which he could later assemble into larger compositions. Against backgrounds of blues, white or the extremely rare gold, Warhol screened eight source images that follow Jackie from her ar ... MEXICO CITY.- Three life-sized Prehispanic sculptures found in fragments almost 20 years ago at Xochicalco Archaeological Zone, Morelos, are exhibited in public for the first time at Cuauhnahuac Regional Museum, after having been reassembled and restored. The exhibition commemorates 100 years of exploration at the site. A jaguar, an iguana and a masculine deity denominated The Creator, approximately 1000 years old, account for the mastery of Xochicalco artists, a civilization that still keeps secrets, since until now only 15% of the area occupied by the Prehispanic city has been explored, informed archaeologist Silvia Garza Tarazona, responsible of reconstruction of the sculptures and curator of the exhibition. Earthly and divine were mixed in this artwork, giving it great symbolic value, mentioned the researcher at the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), adding that the sculptures dated in th ... GENEVA (AP).- German-born photographer Gunter Sachs, best known for his playboy lifestyle and brief marriage to French actress Brigitte Bardot, has committed suicide. He was 78. In a statement released Sunday by his family at his request, Sachs said he chose to end his life after concluding that he was suffering from an incurable degenerative disease affecting his memory and ability to communicate. "I have always stood up to big challenges," the statement said. It provided no details on the timing or circumstances of his death, but German weekly Focus reported that Sachs shot himself Saturday at his home in the exclusive Swiss Alpine resort of Gstaad. Sachs was born into a wealthy industrialist family in 1932, and used his inheritance and business acumen to fund a glamorous lifestyle that fascinated many in post-war Germany of the 1960s and 70s. SAN FRANCISCO, CA.- Cain Schulte Contemporary Art presents Arngunnur Yr. Arngunnur Yr's mastery of painting and the clarity of her vision enable her to take risks that others shy away from. She does not worry about the tension between accessibility and sophistication, but simply embraces it. She looks for what is fundamental in our physical and emotional worlds, and then explores. What does Arngunnur Yr find? This is not a simple question to answer. Perhaps a better starting place would be to ask: What do we as viewers find? Technically, Arngunnur Yr's artworks tend to be oil on wood or paper. Formally, her images are most often essentialized landscapes structured around a horizon line, with a foreground, a background, and a sense of vast enveloping space. Arngunnur Yr purposely chooses this comfortable and accessible i ... More | | Acquavella Galleries Presents an Exhibition of New Work by American Artist Damian Loeb

NEW YORK, NY.- Acquavella Galleries presents an exhibition of new work by American artist Damian Loeb, Verschränkung and the Uncertainty Principle from May 6th through June 17th 2011. The show's title refers to a term used to explain a paradox of quantum physics wherein subject and object were rendered indistinguishable (Verschränkung) and that the act of observation affects the object being observed (the Uncertainty Principle). Loeb uses this theory as a metaphor to examine the false barrier of safety imagined by observers and their culpable connection to the objects being scrutinized. The exhibition examines the inseparable connection between subject and object, model and artist and posits that voyeurism is not one sided or passive but an active relationship connecting the image and viewer. Loebs new paintings are ... More | | Museum of Modern Art in New York Presents Francis Alys: A Story of Deception

More Fifty-Year Career of Peter Voulkos' Work at Frank Lloyd GallerySANTA MONICA, CA.- This selected survey of 20 works spanning the fifty-year career of Peter Voulkos is presented at the Frank Lloyd Gallery during the month of May, 2011. From his earliest work to the monumental late sculpture, Voulkos established himself as a leader. Widely known for that groundbreaking work in the medium of fired clay, Peter Voulkos also made bronze sculpture since 1960, as well as etchings and monotypes. Although primarily known as a ceramic artist, Voulkos cast many works in bronze during his career, and several examples are included in this exhibit. Voulkos also maintained an interest in painting and printmaking. That interest was reflected in the interrelationship of surface quality and incised line. Voulkos' line quality, alternately sinuous and deeply incised into the etching plate, is directly related to the use of sgraffito in the surface of his ceramic sculptures. These elements convey the same ... More 50 Years Later, Students Retrace 1961 Freedom Ride RICHMOND, VA (AP).- Charles Reed Jr. is skipping his college graduation ceremony to do something much more significant to him: retracing the original 1961 Freedom Ride and paying tribute to those who helped win the civil rights that his generation enjoys. Reed says missing Friday's graduation doesn't compare to the sacrifices the original Freedom Riders made when they challenged the South's segregation laws: quitting jobs, dropping out of college and, ultimately, risking their lives. "What the Freedom Rides did 50 years ago paved the way for what I have today as an African-American," said Reed, a 21-year-old business administration major at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg. Reed is one of 40 college students chosen from nearly 1,000 applicants who will join a handful of the original Freedom Riders on an eight-day journey from Washington, D.C., through the South.
