FEATURED TRC RESOURCE

Supporting Young Artists

Each month SAM features a resource at the TRC. In honor of Arts Education month, let's be savvier about talking about how the arts are an important part in the development of every child. Ann S. Epstein and Eli Trimis's Supporting Young Artists: The Development of the Visual Arts in Young Children makes these connections for us, by bringing the experience of making art in line with theory and research in child development. Look for this resource and others by searching the "Art Education" topic in the TRC's online catalogue.

DISCOUNTS FOR EDUCATORS

Teachers receive 20% off membership to the Seattle Art Museum. Proof of current employment as an educator is required.

OUT IN THE COMMUNITY

The Road Map for Education Results is a new initiative of the Community Center for Education Results (CCER). The goal of the Road Map project is to double the number of students in South King County and South Seattle who are on track to graduate from college or earn a career credential by 2010. Many other community-based learning intiatives are being formed locally and nationally. To learn more check out the resources section of CCER's website. We also hope that you will join SAM as we particpate in the Education Results Network, a group of individuals and organizations committed to supporting the efforts of the Road Map project.

ARTS EDUCATION IN THE NEWS

This is a challenging time for arts education across the nation as funding continues to be cut from government, school and program budgets. In response, arts educators must continue to advocate about the many ways that the arts positively impact our communities. For example, the University of Washington produced an economic impact study stating that the recent Picasso exhibition at SAM generated a $66 million dollar economic impact for Washington state. For more information on this study visit the SAM blog.

MAY ART PICK

Works Selected Just for Educators from SAM's Global Collections

Inspired by Sylvia Plath's writing and biography, visual artist Ross Palmer Beecher created the Sylvia Plath Quilt in 1980 to honor the late poet. Beecher adds her artistic approach and creativity to the innovative words of Sylvia Plath, using text and imagery to tell a public and private narrative.

Who has inspired and informed your art education? In honor of Arts Education Month, we encourage you to consider who or what prompted you to think more creatively about the world around you.
