Winter/Spring Film Series

Funny Face
Friday, May 13 | 8 pm
East Building, Museum Auditorium

Funny Face

The Creative Life series concludes with two incandescent movie stars, Audrey Hepburn and Fred Astaire, starring in the delightful Funny Face. The film also features photographer Richard Avedon, couturier Hubert de Givenchy, and composer George Gershwin and is also homage to Diana Vreeland and Carmel Snow, magazine editors when the world’s most creative people wanted to be featured in the pages of Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. Supposedly, more people were inspired to become fashion designers because of Funny Face than any other film. There is simply no modern cinematic equivalent to this combination of chic and artistic genius.

Funny Face
(1957) Directed by Stanley Donen. Audrey Hepburn, Fred Astaire, Kay Thompson. (103 min.)

A mousy Greenwich Village bookshop assistant blooms under the discerning lens of photographer Dick Avery (his lyrical photos shot by Richard Avedon). One of Hepburn’s most perfect films features tempting Paris locations, a stunning Givenchy wardrobe, a Gershwin score, and witty Eloise author Thompson as a “think pink” fashion editor.
