Way of the Dragon: The Chinoiserie Style, 1710–1830 JUNE 30–NOV 6, 2011 Summer of CHINA at the Museum continues with the opening of the fifth (and final) exhibition of the series. The more than fifty decorative objects were made by British artisans “in the Chinese style,” reflecting not only the influence of Chinese art on the West, but also Western ideas of the day about the East. Where The Emperor’s Private Paradise: Treasures from the Forbidden City exhibition includes objects that demonstrate the imperial court adopting certain Western styles and techniques, the Way of the Dragon follows the opposite direction of influence. Though born out of a growing interest in the exotic, admiration for the beauty of Asian art, and a curiosity about Chinese people and places, chinoiserie objects took on a distinct identity, removed from the originals they were created to copy.
