BARCELONA.- The MNAC's collection of Romanesque art has reopened with a new museographic discourse which as well as the mural painting showcases other remarkable techniques in Catalan Romanesque, such as painted panels and wood carvings, as well as highlighting precious metalwork and monumental sculpture. Its interpretation also brings up to date the contributions made over the last 15 years thanks to research here in the Museum and by researchers in the academic world in general. This exhibition is part of a partnership with the Fundación Mapfre in Madrid, taking advantage of the refurbishing work in the Romanesque Art permanent exhibition rooms, which were closed from 15 November 2010 to the beginning of summer 2011. A small selection of his collection, which his relatives placed in the custody of the King Boudewijn Foundation in Brussels, is usually on display in the Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp. HOUSTON, TX (AP).- An exhibit of works by world-renowned fashion photographer Helmut Newton opening Sunday in Houston includes all of the photographs from his first three books. BOSTON, MA.- Claude Monet (1840–1926) painted 30 views of Rouen Cathedral from 1892 to 1895, captured at different times of the day and from various vantage points. Some 75 years later, Roy Lichtenstein (1923–1997) approached the same subject with a fresh eye, one that reflected the bold and graphic sensibilities of another innovative style—pop art. These two visions confront each other in Monet / Lichtenstein: Rouen Cathedrals, which opens to the public on Sunday, July 3, at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The exhibition features 10 canvases—five of Monet’s Rouen Cathedral images from 1893–94 and Lichtenstein’s five-panel interpretation of the subject from 1969—in an exploration of the relationship between these two iconic series. The exhibition is on view July 3 through September 25 in the Lee Gallery at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA), and from ... More

Exhibition of Recent Photographs by Roe Ethridge at Gagosian in Beverly Hills

BEVERLY HILLS, CA.- Gagosian Gallery presents an exhibition of recent photographs by Roe Ethridge. The diverse and sometimes abstruse nature of Ethridge’s imagery -- vintage movie posters, fashion models, a pink rose, a mop bucket, a concrete mixer -- originates from his direct experience of the world, which oscillates between the spontaneous and the staged with such subtlety that it is often difficult to ascertain his elected approach with regard to individual images. His oeuvre melds conceptual photography with commercial work, including out-takes from his own shoots and borrowed images already in circulation in other contexts. With this democratic attitude, Ethridge works to capture the vivid and intimate details of his shifting locales within photography’s classic genres of portrait, landscape, and still life. In this exhibition, he juxtaposes polished photographs of posed models, such as Marloes Horst (2010) a ... More

NEW YORK, NY.- 303 Gallery presents "The Art of Climbing Mountains," a group exhibition inspired by an excerpt of René Daumal's " Mount Analogue" published in 1952. The works in this exhibition investigate a variety of positions and possibilities addressing the challenges of life and the way in which one addresses these challenges - surreal, metaphorical and otherwise. Daumal, the French Surrealist writer, was known for his allegorical novels and translations of sacred Buddhist texts. On view from June 29 through July 29, 2011."Shading Monument for an Artist," 2001-2011, by Cevdet Erek, works with migratory nature of the contemporary art community that moves individuals away from their homes in order to participate. Ed Ruscha poses for a portrait at his Venice, Calif. studio. AP Photo/Hammer Museum, Gary Regester.

LOS ANGELES, CA.- This summer the Hammer Museum presents Ed Ruscha: On the Road, on view through October 2, 2011. This exhibition, organized by Hammer chief curator Douglas Fogle, brings together two great visionaries of art and language - Ed Ruscha and Jack Kerouac. Both men revolutionized the transparent use of words to document and comment on the shifting character of the American cultural landscape. In 1951, Kerouac wrote On the Road on his typewriter as a continuous 120 foot-long scroll, feverishly recording in twenty days his experiences during road trips in the U.S. and Mexico in the late 1940s. With its publication in 1957, Kerouac was acknowledged as the leading voice of the Beat Generation, a group of writers that included Alan Ginsberg and William Burroughs. Over the last few years Ed Ruscha has continued to explore his own fascination with the shifting emblems of American life by turning his keen aesthetic sensi ... More

SHANKSVILLE, PA (AP).- The National Park Service on Monday released new architectural drawings of the first phase of the Flight 93 memorial, which is to be dedicated in time for the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks this fall. One rendering shows a pair of white marble walls framing a ceremonial gateway that provides an entrance to a walkway tracing the path the airplane followed before crashing into the rural field. The other shows a separate memorial gateway — an open-air, concrete structure. A smaller glass enclosure will help provide shelter during bad weather. Only relatives of the 40 passengers and crew who died will be allowed to enter the actual crash site, but the public will be able to view it. There will be 40 vertical marble slabs along one side of the flight path walkway, each with a name of one of the victims on it. MANTUA TOWNSHIP (REUTERS).- Paleontologist Kenneth Lacovara is looking deep in a New Jersey silt mine for the exact moment, 65 million years ago, when all dinosaurs perished. That secret could be harder to uncover if the fossils here can no longer be unearthed after a housing and retail development is built on this open pit. Lacovara, an associate professor of biology at Drexel University in Philadelphia, looks at this 40-foot deep hole at the end of a dirt road and sees a line in the sand where the Cretaceous period begins and ends. Below that line are dinosaurs, above it, not a single one. He thinks that the creatures his team has been uncovering here all died en masse when a meteor struck the earth and changed the course of geologic history. If his theory proves correct, it would be the only burial ground of its kind and provide scientists with a living laboratory to study how the dinosaurs became extinct. New Jersey is the birthplace of dinosaur paleontolog ... More

Officials claim to have one of the most extensive collections of military artifacts from the 1700s, rivaling those at the Smithsonian Institution and the Tower of London. But there's more to see this summer and early fall at the historic site on Lake Champlain than relics from the French and Indian War and the American Revolution. The fort's extensive art collection is getting equal billing with the weaponry on display. For the first time since the fort was rebuilt as a tourist attraction 102 years ago, 50 of Fort Ticonderoga's most important artworks are on display in a single exhibit. They include a painting by Hudson River School founder Thomas Cole, engraved powder horns circa 1759, and a portrait of George Washington by Charles Peale Polk. "You don't have to go ... More
