Iris DeMent, followed by True Grit
Saturday, July 16 | 7 pm

Writing of singer-songwriter Iris DeMent a few years back, Paste magazine said it well: “Her voice carries all the force of nature—raw, plaintive, and soaring—and it’s best showcased in unadorned settings.” The youngest of 14 children, DeMent was born in rural Arkansas and grew up loving gospel and country music. In the 1990s she released a series of albums that brought her distinctive vocal style and gift for autobiographical songwriting to great acclaim. Her champions and collaborators include John Prine, Emmylou Harris, Merle Haggard, Steve Earle, and Garrison Keillor.

The Coen brothers’ remake of True Grit was a box office smash in 2010 and was nominated for 10 Academy Awards. The movie closes with the voice of DeMent singing the beloved hymn “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms,” and that melody is the dominant theme of composer Carter Burwell’s award-winning soundtrack.
