WURZBURG.- On the occasion of the 80th birthday of Heinz Mack, the Kulturspeicher museum in Wurzburg is showing approximately 80 graphic works by the artist from all of his creative periods. The range of the exhibits, which include large-format works, ranges from pen and ink drawings through to frottages and colored pastel crayon drawings. Most works are in the artist's own possession and are presented to the public for the first time. As a co-founder of the artist group ZERO, which he initiated jointly with Otto Piene in 1958 and was later joined by Gunther Uecker, Heinz Mack gained worldwide acclaim. Jointly with Otto Piene and Gunther Uecker he created the ZERO light room (Hommage a Fontana) for documenta III in Kassel in 1964. This installation was later acquired by Museum Kunstpalast and was shown as part of the reopening and new presentation of the museum's collection in an exhibition that began in May in parallel to the exhibition Mack: The language of my hand held th ... NEW YORK, N.Y.- Christie's announced it will join with Takashi Murakami and Kaikai Kiki Co., Ltd. to provide support for the victims of the March 11, 2011 Tohoku-Pacific earthquake in Japan by dedicating a special section of a forthcoming New York auction to the continuing relief effort. Murakami is personally selecting a roster of artists who will donate works to be auctioned. All proceeds from the special sale, including works made by some of the biggest names in contemporary art, will be contributed to organizations providing relief to the survivors of the catastrophe, the effects of which continue to be devastating. Brett Gorvy, Chairman International Head, Christie‟s Post-War and Contemporary Art comments: “The very term „contemporary art‟ implies a connection to the world around us. For Christie‟s, as the international leader in contemporary art, this connection also implies a responsibilit ... More

NEW YORK, N.Y.- Sotheby’s (NYSE: BID) announced the results for the second quarter and first half ended June 30, 2011. For the three and six months ended June 30, 2011, Sotheby’s net income increased by 48% and 54% to $127.2 million and $129.7 million, respectively, when compared to the prior year. This improvement is principally due to significantly higher auction and private sale commission revenues, partially offset by a decline in auction commission margin 2 to 16.4% in both periods, from 18.7% in the second quarter of 2010 and 18.3% in the first half of 2010. Competitive pressures to win high value consignments resulted in lower commission margins, as Sotheby’s consolidated sales reached a record $3.4 billion in the first half of 2011. The net income improvement versus 2010 is also partially offset by a $39.4 million, or 28%, increase in operating expenses in the second quarter and a $54.1 million, ... More

Canon Treasurer Mark Bonney, chairman of the Cathedral’s Exhibitions Committee, said “The title of Sean Henry’s exhibition expresses quite succinctly what visitors to the Cathedral will see. ‘Conflux’ means a bringing together and this exhibition unites Sean’s contemporary, secular sculpture with our existing medieval, classical sculptures. By: Robert Evans

GENEVA (REUTERS).- CERN, focus of research into the Big Bang and what makes the universe tick, on Thursday announced a new program -- fusing science with art to encourage painting and music inspired by the wonders of the cosmos. Or more prosaically a "policy of engaging with the arts" that will involve giving the European nuclear research centre's seal of approval for cultural projects influenced by the particle physics at the heart of its work. "The arts and science are inextricably linked; both are ways of exploring our existence, what it is to be human and what is our place in the universe," said CERN director general Rolf Heuer, a German physicist and classical music fan. Leading Japanese video and photographic artist Mariko Mori provided a more lyrical view of the ideas behind the program, which will ... More

First Solo Exhibition in Scotland by American Artist Ingrid Calame Opens at the Fruitmarket Gallery   Tel Aviv Museum of Art Presents Exhibition of Prints by James Abbott McNeill Whistler   Bonhams to Sell Lincoln Continental Car Adapted for Pope Paul VI and Apollo Astronauts

EDINBURGH.- The Fruitmarket Gallery presents the first solo exhibition in Scotland of the work of American artist Ingrid Calame, whose beautifully-coloured, intricate drawings and paintings have a specific, if abstracted relationship to the world. Calame’s paintings and drawings all begin with Calame tracing marks, stains and cracks on the ground. She then combines, layers and retraces the tracings before transforming them into drawings in coloured pencil or pure pigment and paintings in enamel or, more recently, oil paint. The works that result from this singular process are beautiful and intelligent abstractions. Displayed in a gallery, they retain their connection with the world outside at several removes, exerting an oddly insistent presence. This exhibition brings together drawings and paintings made from 1994 to 2011. Poised between sspspss..UM biddle BOP, 1997, a huge painting on Mylar (architectural tracing paper) that drapes from the gallery ... More

The etchings included in this display feature modern cityscapes transformed by industrialization and related economic and social changes, as well as everyday scenes from the lives of the lower classes in Paris and London.

Tel Aviv.- This display at the Tel Aviv Museum features a selection of the etchings created by James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834, Lowell, Massachusetts − 1903, London) − an American-born painter and etcher who worked in England and France in the mid-19th century. Whistler set off for Europe in 1855, when he was 21 years old − arriving in London and then moving on to Paris, where he enrolled at the École Impériale et Spéciale de Dessin. The following year, he studied at the atelier of the Swiss artist Charles Gleyre. Like his fellow artists Honoré Daumier, Jean-François Millet, and Édouard Manet, and like French Realists such as Gustave Courbet (whose art influenced him at the onset of his career), Whistler exploited the unique qualities of the etching medium to describe modern life from a socially and politically critical perspective. $500,000 Grant Creates Postdoctoral Fellowship Program at Toledo Museum of Art
TOLEDO, OH.- The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded a $500,000 grant to the Toledo Museum of Art for the design and implementation of a postdoctoral fellowship program that addresses one of the singular challenges facing the field today—preparing tomorrow’s museum leaders. The new program is unusual in that it blends curatorial work with the interdisciplinary nature of museum operations, according to Toledo Museum of Art Director Brian Kennedy. “We will provide mentorship, work experience and broad, cross-departmental learning opportunities that should be of great value to those early in their careers. That blend will give the Fellows broad-based knowledge and experience that is both required and crucial for the next generation of museum leaders,” Kennedy said. The new initiative actually refreshes a fellows program offered from 1970–78 by the Museum. That program produced 36 graduates, many ... More

National Museum of Scotland Attracts 100,000 Visitors in Six Days
EDINBURGH.- The newly redeveloped National Museum of Scotland has attracted over 100,000 visitors in the first six days since it opened to the public last Friday morning. Prior to opening, Museum staff predicted they might achieve the 100,000 mark within two weeks of opening, but that target was smashed in less than half the time expected, with the first week’s tally expected to reach around 120,000. Visitors have come from far and near, with locals and families well-represented in addition to increasing volumes of tourists arriving for the Edinburgh Festivals. Gordon Rintoul, Director, National Museums Scotland, said: “The number of visitors we have had so far is absolutely fantastic. We were always confident that there would be a high level of interest in our transformed Museum, but to get over 100,000 people in less than a week really has surpassed all of our expectations.” The Museum reopened last Friday, 29 ... New Book: Margaret Evangeline, Shooting Through the Looking Glass
NEW YORK, N.Y.- American artist Margaret Evangeline uses radically different yet complimentary media such as painting, video, and performance to make artworks that are as tactilely seductive as they are conceptually unsettling. In one signature body of work, the artist introduces bullet holes into otherwise pristine stainless steel surfaces, in an act of aesthetic contemplation that she describes as “the sensation of painting without the paint.” Evangeline’s subject matter comes from a wide range of sources: marginalized women, art history, American gun culture, the artist’s heritage, and her complex relationship to the various geographic sites of her unusual practice. Evangeline’s mirror-like surfaces, sometimes part of large-scale site-specific installations in natural environments, seem both fragile and aggressive. The artist’s primal battering of materials results in a surprisingly feminine voice attuned to simplicity at the service ... More
