VIENNA.- Max Weiler (1910 2001) was not only a great painter, but also a fascinating and important graphic artist. In more than seventy years of creative activity, he produced an estimated 4000 drawings covering virtually all formats and techniques and forming a collection that is on par with his paintings. The exhibition provides insights into Max Weilers entire drawing oeuvre, focusing on the development and variety of the works as well as the significance they had for the artist himself. Parallel to the paintings, the drawings constitute a world of their own. At the same time, however, they are interrelated - a relationship, which is illuminated with a selection of paintings on display. The work of the painter Max Weiler (1910-2001) has been explored over the past 20 years with the help of numerous exhibitions and scholarly publications. Here, too, his lifes theme of the pictorial crossover between nature and spirituality took centre stage, and the drawi ... More

Josef Danhauser, Newspaper readers , 1840. Oil on wood, 21 x 17 cm. Belvedere, Vienna © Belvedere, Vienna.
VIENNA.- During his lifetime, Josef Danhauser (18051845) was one of the most important artists in Vienna, and his name is inseparably linked with the epoch known today as the Biedermeier era. The summer exhibition at the Orangery presents the artist as a storyteller. His paintings grant a revealing glimpse into the life and thought of his time. Trained at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts to be a history painter, Danhauser soon overcame the academic traditionalism to enrich his historical and religious topics with genre elements. What distinguished him most was his extraordinary ability to translate literary texts into pictorial language. Gestures, facial expressions, and telling movements are the vehicle of his pictorial narratives; and behind it all lie a daring use of satire and acute powers of observation. Inspired by the series of engravings by the English painter William Hogarth (16971764) and the Vienna street scenes ... More
At GL STRAND Georg Baselitz latest works are presented on three floors.
COPENHAGEN.- With the exhibition Baselitz Re-Mixed Kunstforeningen GL STRAND has opened its doors to one of the most significant painters today. Georg Baselitz (b. 1938) is one of the most prominent visual artists of his generation. The German artist works with sculpture, drawings and graphic art, but is best known for his characteristic paintings whose subjects are often shown upside down. This detaches the subject from the reality it represents. Now Georg Baselitz has introduced a new artistic device into his art: the remix. This is a concept taken from the world of music. In the remix pictures he re-paints his own subjects from the 1960s and 1970s. In this way he looks at his paintings afresh and renews himself. At the same time Baselitz quotes the works of other artists, re-paints them and thus makes the subjects his own: they are his painterly comments on other artists work. The artists to whom Baselitz refers in his remix pictures include Edvard Munch, ... More
Chinese vaas met fencai decoratie van Indiase lotusbloemen en plastische figuurtjes van spelende kinderen, Qianlong dynastie (1736-1795), 31,1 cm, collectie Shanghai museum.
THE HAGUE.- Only the best was ever good enough for the court of imperial China. It had its own special factories using the highest quality porcelain, the most virtuoso craftsmen and the finest pigments to produce the crème de la crème of Chinese ceramics. Now, for the very first time, a hundred of these masterpieces from the collection of the Shanghai Museum are exhibited outside Asia. However, the Sovereign Splendour exhibition at the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag does not present these magnificent examples of imperial porcelain in isolation: through a focus on the symbolism and significance of their decoration, it also introduces the public to the fascinating myths and traditions of pre-revolutionary China. In the early seventeenth century, it became fashionable in the Netherlands to collect Chinese porcelain. Pieces imported by the Dutch East ... HAVANA (AP).- Revolutionary icon Fidel Castro marked his 85th birthday behind closed doors Saturday as the aging leader famous for railing against Washington increasingly fades from the spotlight even if his outsize persona continues to cast a long shadow over Cuban society and U.S. relations. There were no announcements of how Castro planned to spend the day, though Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, in Havana for cancer treatment, said via Twitter that he was with his longtime friend and political mentor. "Here with Fidel, celebrating his 85th birthday! Viva Fidel!" Chavez tweeted. The previous night two dozen musical acts from across Latin America held a concert in Castro's honor. "What we say in the songs of our invited artists will be little next to what he deserves," Alfredo Vera, one of the organizers, said late Friday. ... More

HAMBURG.- The exhibition "Cornet of Horse" features several installation settings by Berlin-based artist Henning Bohl (born in 1975) that are linked both in terms of content and in terms of recurring motifs and materials and the way these are employed. Besides referring to each other, Bohls works also contain numerous, often subtle references to other art (movements). While his use of references follows a certain logic, it does not necessarily aim to produce meaning. Bohl is more interested in creating arrangements that tell stories and in how they are told. The exhibition in Hamburg is centred around two objects that resemble tables insofar as they have four legs (made from Schultüten, paper cones that are filled with small gifts and given to German children on their first day of school), a horizontal frame (a stretcher frame of the type used for mounting canvasses) and an oversized ... Dieter Meier and Harald Falckenberg.
HAMBURG.- For the first time, Deichtorhallen Hamburg is showcasing the versatile oeuvre of Zurich artist and polymath Dieter Meier in the form of a comprehensive museum show. The exhibition runs through September 11, 2011 at Sammlung Falckenberg (Phoenix-Werke, in Hamburgs Harburg district). In the 1980s, Meier first became known to the broader general public as part of the music duo YELLO, which is now considered one of the most influential electro-Pop acts per se. At the same time, Dieter Meier was active as a film and videoclip director, and his music videos for YELLO emphatically defined the genre and were constantly on show on MTV. Far less well-known is Dieter Meiers oeuvre as a Concept and performance artist, starting as long ago as the late 1960s. With his radical situationism, as absurd as it was humorous, Meier started to explore new spaces and scope for art, and was repeatedly inspired to stage performance in public spaces relying on direct interac ... One of the most original and compelling sculptors of his generation, Thomas Houseago is known for his often monumental sculptures which subvert classical and modernist forms using a variety of materials (wood, clay, plaster, iron and steel); a synthesis of abstraction and figuration, they clearly reveal the process of making and often contain elements of the drawing which lies at their core. Thomas Houseago was born in Leeds, England in 1972. He studied at the St. Martins College of Art and De Ateliers in Amsterdam. More Olaf Nicolai Transforms the Staircase in the Pinakothek der Moderne into a Stage MUNICH.- Since 1997, Olaf Nicolai has developed a wide variety of interdisciplinary projects through his examination of body, time and space. His most recent work, »Escalier du Chant«, is a sound installation made especially for the sweeping staircase in the Pinakothek der Moderne. At its centre is the human voice with both its sensual power of expression and its political dimension. Olaf Nicolai has invited twelve international composers to write songs about topical political events throughout the current year events that at the present time are just as unforeseeable as the compositions themselves. Premieres of these songs are performed a capella on the staircase in the Pinakothek der Moderne on twelve Sundays. There are no specific times for the performances as the songs are repeated at varying intervals several times throughout the day. They are sung by the Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart. More Art Thieves Nab $250,000 Rembrandt from California HotelLOS ANGELES (REUTERS).- Investigators were examining hotel surveillance video on Sunday for clues to the disappearance of a drawing by Rembrandt from a private exhibit near Los Angeles, officials said. The pen-and-ink drawing known as "The Judgment" by the 17th century Dutch artist Rembrandt van Rijn, vanished on Saturday night from the Ritz-Carlton Marina del Rey while the curator was "distracted" for about 15 minutes, said Steve Whitmore, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office. "When he turned back, the pen-and-ink drawing was gone," Whitmore said. "We believe there was more than one person involved," he added. The drawing, which is valued at $250,000 and measures about 11 by 6 inches, was part of a weekly exhibit hosted at the exclusive hotel by the Linearis Institute, Whitmore said. Sheriff's officials were reviewing hotel surveillance tape on Sunday, he said. "We believe this to be well planned and well executed," Whitmore said, but he said investigators ... Alfred Zoppelt says he was fired after 23 years of working as an attendant at the Belvedere, a castle in Vienna with a major art collection. He says his adherence to urine therapy was previously "never a problem." Zoppelt, 57, said Thursday his notice from Belvedere says he was fired because "you regularly rub urine into your skin, particularly the face and hands. With this, you soil your place of work ... and threaten the health of your co-workers." A woman answering the Belvedere press department phone confirmed that Zoppelt was fired but refused to give her name or further information. Believers in urine therapy claim medical and cosmetic benefits but these have not been proven. ... More
