NEW YORK, NY.- A monumental ancient Egyptian statue of a seated pharaoh —probably Amenemhat II —will be lent to The Metropolitan Museum of Art by Berlin’s renowned Ägyptisches Museum und Papyrussammlung, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin - Preussischer Kulturbesitz for a period of ten years, beginning this month. The ten-foot-tall, nearly nine-ton, 4,000-year-old sculpture entered the Berlin museum’s collection in 1837. Because of a construction project now underway —to renovate the courtyard on Museumsinsel (Museum Island) where the artwork has most recently been displayed— the statue had to be moved, thereby providing the opportunity for this long-term loan. The sculpture will go on view in the Metropolitan’s Great Hall for approximately one year before it is moved into The Lila Acheson Wallace Galleries of Egyptian Art. The Middle Kingdom sculpture is an outstanding example of ancient Egypt ... More

LOS ANGELES, CA.- Regen Projects and kurimanzutto are presenting Distant Star / Estrella Distante an exhibition based on the writings of Chilean born writer Roberto Bolaño (b. 1953 - d. 2003). Bolaño's writing -- lyrical, evocative, transformative, political, and powerful -- has been a common passion for many of the artists in this exhibition as well as the organizers. The exhibition is partly homage to the writer, and partly an exploration of the timbre and topicality of his works. Bolaño is the most important Latin American writer, and perhaps writer regardless of birthplace, to emerge in English translation in the last decade. He was widely known and appreciated in Spanish long before that. Dominique Gonzalez Foerster mentioned the celebrated novel Savage Detectives in an Artforum Top Ten in 2007 -- "I ex- ... More

Hoyland's early work was influenced by 'New American Painting'.

LONDON.- John Hoyland, one of Britain's leading abstract painters, has died at the age of 76. His work was known for its use of simple shapes and engaging colours, often on a large scale. In his later career he experimented with texture, layering paint thickly onto canvases. Hoyland's early work was influenced by 'New American Painting', a 1959 exhibition at the Tate. Following his first solo show in 1964 he traveled to America, where he met leading American artists including Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman. Returning to Britain, he established himself as a major artist with his 1967 exhibition, 'Paintings 1960–67'. John Hoyland's Art Funded works can be seen above. John Hoyland studied at Sheffield School of Art from 1951 to 1956 and subsequently at the Royal Academy Schools from 1956 to 1960. He went on to teach at Hornsey College of Art from 1960 to 1962 and at Chelsea School of Art from 1962 to 1969 where he was also Principal Lecturer from 1965 to 1969. Subsequently, he ... More

BRIDGEPORT (REUTERS).- An employee of the historic home of Mark Twain, who once wrote "the lack of money is the root of all evil," pleaded guilty on Friday to embezzling more than $1 million from the tourist attraction. Donna Gregor, 58, admitted in District Court that she fudged the books to steal from the financially troubled Mark Twain House and Museum in West Hartford, authorities said. A long-time employee of the famed American writer's historic home, Gregor pleaded guilty to charges of wire fraud and filing a false tax return, according to Thomas Carson, a spokesman for the U.S. Justice Department. Twain, born Samuel Clemens, had money troubles himself while living in the home from 1874 to 1891, during which time he wrote such American classics as "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" and "Huckleberry Finn". Financial problems forced Twain to leave the Victorian Gothic home for Europe, according to the website According ... More

SAMARRA (AP).- The bombing of a revered Shiite shrine in this Sunni city in central Iraq opened the worst chapter of the war, two years of sectarian bloodshed. Five years after its destruction, the iconic dome of the al-Askari shrine in Samarra is nearly rebuilt — but it's the focus of a fresh sectarian dispute over Shiites' expansion plans for the site. Shiite authorities are buying up nearby Sunni homes with the intent of tearing them down to make room for hotels, restaurants and other amenities for pilgrims. Sunnis say there's little financial benefit for them in any of this. They contend that the construction jobs are going to Shiites and that pilgrims are herded away from the surrounding community. "The problem is that you, as a Samarra local, you have no contact with the pilgrims," said Jaafar Hamid, a resident. "We have unemployment. We should feel some progress because of the construction and the expansion. But we haven't felt any- ... More

MOSCOW.- The Fourth Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art announced the participation of Ai Weiwei, the prominent Chinese dissident artist, who will exhibit his video, ``Beijing: The Second Ring,’’ (2005). This artwork documents the two opposite views of traffic flow on the 33 bridges along Beijing’s Second Ring Road. The artist films each side (direction) of each bridge for 1 minute, which means 2 minutes for each bridge. The entire work is made of 66 segments (1 hour and 6 minutes). Whereas the artist’s ``Beijing: The Third Ring’’ was shot on sunny days, the segments for this film were made on cloudy days. The act of recording is minimal, focusing on observation and the nature of time. The film documents Beijing’s historic aspects, its modern development and 13 million people, the mass transport, and urban reality. Ring roads are important urban transport elements in Beij ... Prosecutor Urges Judge Not to Release Historian
BALTIMORE (AP).- A presidential historian has been scheming to steal valuable documents from archives throughout the Northeast for years — if not decades — and his release from federal custody could put more pieces of American history at risk if he tries to cover his tracks, a prosecutor argued Thursday. U.S. Magistrate Judge Susan K. Gauvey approved the release of Barry Landau, 63, to his Manhattan apartment with GPS monitoring, but put the release on hold until another judge hears an appeal from prosecutors Friday afternoon. Landau and his assistant, 24-year-old Jason Savedoff, are charged with stealing valuable historical documents from the Maryland Historical Society and conspiring to steal documents from other archives. The historian would use different routines to distract curators and had sports jackets and overcoats altered to allow him to stash documents inside large pockets, Assistant U.S. ... More

South Africa to Open New Museum Honoring Nelson Mandela
JOHANNESBURG (AP).- South African officials say they will build a dedicated museum honoring Nelson Mandela's struggle against apartheid, on the site where he was arrested 49 years ago. Mandla Mandela spoke Friday on behalf of his grandfather at the launch of an exhibition at the undeveloped museum site. He said Mandela asked him to urge South Africans to remember all who were active in the struggle against apartheid, not just him. The provincial government will pay for the $1.2 million museum and memorial, which is expected to create jobs in the largely rural area. Mandela was arrested near the town of Howick, some 300 miles (500 kilometers) from Johannesburg, on August 5, 1962.
