The university says researchers have discovered a carcinogenic substance in the flask believed to have belonged to Queen Hatshepsut, who ruled Egypt 3,500 years ago. BERLIN (AP).- A German university said Friday that researchers have discovered a carcinogenic substance in a flask of lotion believed to have belonged to Queen Hatshepsut, who ruled Egypt 3,500 years ago — raising a possibility she may have accidentally poisoned herself. The University of Bonn said it spent two years researching the dried-out contents of the flask, which is part of its Egyptian Museum's collection and bears an inscription saying it belonged to Hatshepshut. It said the flask contains what appears to have been a lotion or medicine used to tackle skin disorders such as eczema. The contents included palm and nutmeg oil, along with fatty acids of the kind that can relieve such disorders. There are known to have been cases of skin diseases in Hatshepsut's family, the university said. Researchers also found benzopyrene, an aromatic and highly carcinogenic hydrocarbon. "If one imagines that the queen had a chro ... More

Portrait of Calvin Goodman by Gordon Wetmore.

NEW YORK, NY.- Calvin J. Goodman, influential mentor to artists and advisor to arts organizations, died in Los Angeles on August 17th, 2011 of natural causes. For over five decades Goodman worked with such renowned artists as Louise Nevelson, Hans Burckhart, Harry Jackson, and Françoise Gilot, and countless other artists. Known for his insight into the thoughts that motivate an artist, Goodman had an uncanny ability to help creative spirits discover and connect with the audience their work would speak to. Convinced that art answers to basic human needs and is no mere fad nor ornament, Goodman became a powerful resource for artists seeking the constituency that would make all the difference between life in a garret and a successful career. Among Goodman’s unique contributions was his Art Marketing Handbook, a virtual bible for artists and art dealers addressing every aspect of its subject from gallery design to contracts, pricing, sales presentations, and professional ethics ... LONDON.- In the year of the 60th anniversary of the Festival of Britain, Bonhams are to sell a painting by Ruskin Spear of the inaugural Festival in 1951. It is estimated to fetch £10,000-15,000 when it goes under the hammer in the Modern Pictures auction at Bonhams, Knightsbridge on Tuesday 20th September. This painting depicts the celebrations along the Embankment during the Festival of Britain in 1951. The festival aimed to create a feeling of hope, recovery and progress and positivity to a country recovering from the ravages of the Second World War. On the opposite side of the river, Southbank was a key area of the festival and new public spaces were created in the area including the river side walk. In this painting Ruskin Spear has chosen to concentrate on the crowds and decorations on the northern bank of the Thames rather than the new modernist buildings on the opposite side of the river. THIRUVANANTHAPURAM (REUTERS.- A stream of bare-chested religious devotees step gingerly through metal detectors at the Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple in southern India as armed commandos with AK-47s guard perhaps one of the world's greatest treasures to surface in recent times. For months now, following a court order to prise open subterranean vaults sealed for centuries at the heart of sleepy Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of balmy Kerala state, shell-shocked experts have been coming to terms with the vast hidden hoard, estimated at one trillion Indian rupees, or $22 billion. In a nation where 500 million people are still mired in poverty, the find has been a revelation, stoking debate over how to best safeguard and use this newly discovered wealth at a time of financial uncertainty and modernization across ... SANTA FE, N.M. (AP).- It's been two years since swarms of federal agents burst into nearly two dozen homes scattered throughout the archeologically rich Southwest, looking to take down what they believed was a criminal element robbing Native American grave sites and illicitly selling or trading pieces of the nation's heritage. Prosecutors are nearly done working their way through the list of defendants charged following those raids, having negotiated plea agreements with most that have resulted in nothing more than probation. But for legitimate dealers and collectors of Indian artifacts, the sting in the rugged Four Corners region — where the boundaries of Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado meet — is as fresh today as when the raids happened that summer day in 2009. Since then, they've been struggling to rebuild their reputations and to dispel the "fantasy" that they are part of a black market dealing in rare, pricey bits of American ... More

Paris Left Bank Comes to Edinburgh at Bonhams Colourists Sale
EDINBURGH.- A major painting by the Scottish Colourist, John Duncan Fergusson, is one of the highlights of the sale of Bonhams' Colourists and other Scottish painters in Edinburgh on the evening of Wednesday 31 August. The work, ‘At the Milliner’s Paris’, depicts some of the dressmaking assistants Fergusson met at the louche Cafe d’Harcourt in the Latin Quarter on the Left Bank in Paris where they would gather after work and mingle with students from the nearby Sorbonne University. It was a favourite haunt of Fergusson’s when he was living and working in Paris before the First World War and based in a studio in the Rue Notre Dame des Champs. (The cafe continued as a student meeting place until the Nazi invasion in 1940 when it was turned into a German run bookshop. It is now a branch of Gap). Edinburgh born Fergusson was the most travelled of the four Scottish Colourists (the other three be ... More

Museum Hosts Works by Most Prominent Street Artists Currently Active in Tel Aviv
TEL AVIV.- In recent years, the streets of Tel Aviv – especially those in the city's central and southern neighborhoods – have been flooded with visual images, which pop up on the exteriors of abandoned houses and on other types of walls. These images range from simple slogans to complex graffiti inscriptions and carefully planned, colorful compositions. Some of these works are remarkably large, while others are small and almost invisible; what characterizes them all is the bold and innovative relationships they forge with the surrounding urban environment. Created by various artists, these images are defined by different stylistic choices and techniques (ranging from the use of spray paint or acrylic paint to stenciling and the addition of pasted elements). Some of these works are painted in color, while others are black-and-white. They are all characterized by a clandestine and illegal production process, which ... More

Sunken Treasure Sparks Legal Tussle
By: Tom Hals
WILMINGTON, DE (REUTERS).- It was an eye-popping investment pitch no one else could match -- in return for $2 million, Manhattan accountant Neil Ash was offering investors a stake in the one of the biggest sunken treasures ever, an underwater site teeming with emeralds. The hitch: When Ash took backers to a Citibank vault to inspect gems that had quietly been recovered from the sea, they were gone. That set in motion a complicated and colorful legal scramble to lay claim to a trove of emeralds worth up to $500 million, according to court documents. It's a story marked by accusations of double-dealing, corporate mutiny and deceit. The cast includes an investor who once oversaw Citigroup's hedge fund business, a Democratic Party insider who has hosted the Obama family at his Hawaii getaway and an unlikely amateur treasure hunter. The main legal dispute has played out quietly in Delaware's Chancery Court, where Jay Miscovich, a retired doctor who apparently found the ... More
