HAMBURG.- The Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg is showing the exhibition Stylectrical On Electro-Design That Makes History from 26th August 2011 until 15th January 2012. The exhibition takes a look at the complex process of industrial product design in the context of cultural studies. Once again the Museum is taking up a highly topical and socially relevant subject. The focus is on the design of Jonathan Ive (*1967), Senior Vice President of Industrial Design at Apple, and responsible for creating all of the devices of the California based company. His products are of incomparable popularity on account of their extremely consistent and recognizable design. A quarter of the approximately 400 exhibits are products by Apple, which are shown for the first time in a comprehensive overview. The exhibition traces a retrospective of works as well as of the company's internal development of design, and provide ... CHICHESTER.- Pallant House Gallery is presenting Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera: Masterpieces from the Gelman Collection. This major touring exhibition, which is in Chichester for its only UK showing, brings together the iconic paintings of Frida Kahlo (1907 1954) and Diego Rivera (1886 1957), the two central figures of Mexican Modernism, for the first time in this country. Few artists have captured the public's imagination with the force of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo and her husband, the Mexican painter and muralist Diego Rivera. The myths that surrounded them in their lifetime arose not only from their significant body of work, but also from their active participation in the life of their time, their friendships (and conflicts) with leading figures, their striking physical appearance and spirited natures. Their work speaks of a fierce loyalty to and pride in Mexico, the ideals of the 1910 revoluti ... More

LONDON.- Bonhams are to sell The Golden Arrow by Terence Cuneo in their Modern Paintings auction on 20th September 2011 at Bonhams Knightsbridge. The painting is estimated to sell for £40,000-60,000. The Golden Arrow was a luxury boat train that ran between Londons Victoria station and Dover. Passengers would then take the ferry across the Channel to Calais and complete their journey from there to Paris by another train, the Fleche dOr. The train was initially entirely for first-class passengers, before later being expanded. Between September 1939 and April 1946 it ceased to run because of the war, and later in 1951 it had a new set of Pullman cars built as part of the celebrations of the Festival of Britain. The train made its final journey in September 1972. Famed for his paintings of trains, horses and military action, Cuneo (1907-1996) was also distinguished for being the official artist of the Coronation of ... More

ZURICH.- The exhibition Construir Desconstruyendo offers a glimpse at the fascinating work of rediscovered Uruguayan artist Wifredo Díaz Valdéz (born 1932), who creates unusual wooden sculptures out of imaginatively deconstructed everyday objects. Wifredo Díaz Valdéz constructs artworks by disassembling furniture, tools, and all sorts of everyday utensils to be found in rural Uruguay, and doing so with the greatest artisanal precision and love of detail. But this well-planned dismantling is not about destruction, but rather the creation of something entirely new. The artist begins by analyzing the object he has selected according to its organic quality, considers the conditions of its wooden structure, the texture of its surface, among other things, before moving on to thinking about possible new volumes as they emerge, and the ultimate artistic ... More Rhino horn thieves fooled by replicas in United Kingdom heist LONDON (AP).- Thieves have struck a British museum aiming to cart away rare rhino horns but it turns out they took replicas instead. The foiled heist at the Natural History Museum at Tring follows a string of rhino horn thefts in Britain and continental Europe. The horns are revered in parts of Asia for their purported aphrodisiac and medicinal value and are often ground into powder. The museum, located 30 miles (48 kilometers) northwest of London in the county of Hertfordshire, was closed Saturday while police investigated the early morning crime. Displays are being repaired and the museum will reopen Sunday. Museum officials say the replicas have no financial value. They estimate the real horns would have been worth about 240,000 pounds ($391,000) in the illegal trade. ...
