| | | | Lured by gold, two greedy peasants escort a man and woman across enemy lines without realizing that their companions are actually a princess and her general in this 1958 jidai-geki film, The Hidden Fortress. Directed by Akira Kurosawa and starring Toshirō Mifune as General Rokurota Makabe and Misa Uehara as Princess Yuki, George Lucas has acknowledged the key influence of this film on Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. Particularly influential was the technique of telling the story from the points of view of the film's lowliest characters, think C-3PO and R2-D2, as well as Kurosawa's subtle use of frame wipes as a transition device, which is also seen in Star Wars. Bring a picnic dinner and enjoy this free film screening under the stars while relaxing on the lawn. The film will begin at sunset, approximately 8:00 p.m. Early arrival is suggested. The Hidden Fortress is presented in collaboration with the San Diego Asian Film Foundation, and celebrates the Museum’s renowned collection of Asian Art. | | | | | | | | |
